klick2me said: MJ sang Man in the Mirror during this award show. I often wondered what Prince thought of that performance while he watched from the audience. After MJ was done singing, the camera caught a little bit of Prince. Come to think of it; what live shows has Prince attended when it comes to MJ or Jackson 5? He attended one of the Victory Tour's Texas shows IIRC.

i think i see a lime green blob jumiping around clapping. yes, in fact, he was an early supporter of vegas, i remember checking out her first album because he somehow namechecked it.

I just watched mj wembley, he was still in top form at the time, who knows why he decided to sync, the rumour was, later on during the bad tour that he blew his voice out, never was confirmed but he stopped singing live from there. Terence Trent sang better than he did that night too, the voice is unpredictable and sometimes we're so accustomed to hearing the pristine studio performance that a live performance sounds ragged, as I've gotten older, that's lessened but back then? I would hear guys singing live, even Prince and Bruce and think they couldn't sing at all.

A little jump up and clapping. Kind of hard to see but Vega noticed. Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

how can you tell, sure she did notice though. I like a couple of vegas tunes, not a big fan but it made sense that the guy who loved joni would like that kind of folk.

Suzanne Vega's records were so good. I loved her music - Left Of Center, Luka, and Tom's Diner re-mixed by DNA was a huge mainstream hit. She was great. * U2 deserved that win. Joshua Tree was and still is an amazing record. One of my favorites. However, Prince should have gotten more recognition for SOTT. [Edited 3/21/19 7:08am]

Thank you for posting this link! I know I watched it back then, but it's great to see her beautiful performance again. NO lip-synching at all, playing her own guitar, and I LOVE how Prince gave her his own standing ovation

Yes, his letter to her says it all. Seems that his song Papa was somewhat autobiographical in that he was very harshly punished as a small child. I’m sure the song “What’s The Matter Here” by 10,000 Maniacs also resonated with him. I loved that album too.

in those times many of us were, luka wasn't even my fave from Vega, i loved Cracking, listened to it 10 15 times yesterday because of this. Poor girl, the folk singers had a tough road to hoe in that business, even when they were getting push, tracy chapman too, they just didn't fare too well in the age of talentless video mavens.

They both had a pretty big following for awhile though - Suzanne in the alternative circuit and Tracy gained a wider audience with Fsst Car. Unfortunately, talent alone doesn’t equate to mass appeal. My favorite one of Suzanne Vega’s is Left Of Center. Always loved that one and still do.

tracy went to war with the execs before even prince, the born to fight and crossroads are some of the best folk songs I've heard in my lifetime. Poor susanne though, i forget which video it was but it looked like they were trying to madonnarize her a little bit. Didn't work. The years of deep lyrics was 25 years gone by that point.
