Yes I’d like to see some of Prince’s versions see the light of day (like nc2u), but as part of a larger collection of vault material, not as a bonus disk with the original albums, there’s a bigger picture to tell about his recording processes and musical legacy. All Day All Night comes to mind, the Revolution recently played it live and they obviously feel it’s a Prince and the Revolution song, that just bapppened to end up on Jill’s album in a slightly toned down version. So I think ‘we’ have to keep a broader mindset on where the songs originated and their journey as songs.

Highlights of my 2018 were hearing Prince's vocal versions of NC2U, 101 and The Glamorous Life.

I imagine that there is a Prince version of every single track he ever gave away!

Yes please, as long as there's a physical or lossless release. Streaming alone is pointless.

There are tracks that people forgot or didn't know existed on related project albums that could have a new life on streaming if they were readily available, for instance "Leader Of The Band" from Sheila's Icon album is now on Amazon Prime Music. TBH I didn't even know this one existed. If the estate or someone made/maintained a Spotify playlist of associated acts/features/collaborations these tunes could get attention versus languishing in obscurity. Ledisi's "Ain't Gonna Miss U" isn't on Prime Music. Strangely some of the later years albums including Chaos & Disorder and HNR II re-appeared on Prime the other day.

Ain't Gonna Miss U When U're Gone was in fact credited to "Prince feat. Ledisi" so it's not an associate song, it's an Estate-owned Prince release. It appears to be an orphan song but I wonder it it was ever included of any configuration of any album. God knows what concepts Prince toyed with those last few years.

Fascinating thanks for the facts on the Ledisi cut, one of my faves.

Yeah it was great. I tend, by habit, to listen to albums more than those non-album tracks folders so I was really sad not to see it on any album.

The playlist idea isn't silly: the Estate does not need to own the tracks' masters to make a playlist and generate income from publishing. I wonder, however, how many of those songs are now on streaming platforms: many were on relatively obscure releases that have remained out of print for decades.

I would love physical releases, but I'm sure there is a ton of material that would never see a CD/vynil release.

That's why I ask for a streaming service.

That's why I included Lossless. smile

.

Besides, the most obscure stuff gets released physically these days, it's about expectations. The audience for, say, a Madhouse re-release is a lot smaller than a 1999 or SOTT re-release, and the people in charge should know that and set their expectations accordingly, but there is still an audience for Madhouse.

.

The estate, Sony or whoever can put out a big Prince release every year or two and market it to the larger audience, and they can fill in the gaps to the hardcore with the more niche stuff. Not that I expect them to do so, afterall people wanted Prince to do a similar thing in the last couple of decades of his career with something like the NPGMC and he never did.

Yeah, that'd be great... but just think that for every 101, there's a Glamorous Life which has Prince's vocal play back fiddle to Jill. Or even worse... Nothing Compares 2 U, where they take the wrong mix to put Prince's vocals to. Imagine the mix of Nothing Compares as it is on the family album with Prince's vocals.. that would be heaven!

.

I am still hoping the estate will start a diversified strategy. One for the big audience out there, with a Remaster Series (with bonus) and some live video/audio at semi-regular intervals with marketing around it, combined with a somewhat expensive fan release as digital only (lossless) and a fan club/streaming subscription that will also allow tickets to events (cinema showings of the movies, one of live show videos, paisley celebration, whatever) and some regularly changing very deep dive stuff, like alternates of the released tracks....

.

However, that would be paying tribute to the legacy and might make some money, so I doubt it'll ever happen.

Hope is not a strategy.

And a strategy from the Estate?

Even in the old days a strategy was hard to discern...
