Soul Sanctuary - mainly for the way he sings the song, and for the sadness he expresses because he is missing a woman whom he loved but is no longer with....

*

"Loving you in silence, knowing that it's right
Under your gaze I ponder this love tonight
Unbothered by the chaos swirling 'round outside
In your arms is where I want to live and die
Someplace where your face is all that I see
Where the love we make intoxicates intensively
In a mirror where your sweet reflection used 2 be
There is hope, there is joy, my soul sanctuary
My soul sanctuary"

*

Comeback - the fact that it is said to be about the loss of his child. Beautiful but heartwrenching song - the lyrics and the way he sings it...

*

"Walking up the stairs
Just the afternoon
Sweet wind blew
Not a moment 2 soon
(Hoo) I cry when I realized
That sweet wind was U
Spirits come and spirits go
Some stick around 4 the aftershow
Don't have 2 say I miss U (don't have 2 say I miss U)
Cause I think U already know
If U ever lose someone
Dear 2 U
Never say the words their gone
They'll come back, yeah
They'll come back, yeah yeah
They'll come back
Tears go here
Tears go here
Tears go here
Tears go here"

The 1983 First Avenue performance of "A Case of You". He was so young and sang that song like an angel.

Sounds crazy, but this is a huge favorite of mine...

Like Frank and Ava

We'd paint the town

Just on the floor

Getting way down...

The guitar part in the last verse of Empty Room, particularly when he's singing "love is strong, however long"... Sounds like his soul crying. Incredible.

Yes! That note bend he does is insane. I always think Prince takes a guitar solo when words aren't enough to Express what he wants to say

One of his best, if not his best songs about heartbreak. It doesn’t make me tear up, but it does make me think “wow, his feelings ran very deep for her”.

I loved his speech about the song at his PP show in 2001 or 2002. He was asking the men in the audience if they’ve ever had their hearts broken. He said “your signicant other’s gone, she’s been gone for two months, and you find a piece of her hair on the bathroom window and you tape it to the mirror to remember her.”

The vulnerability in his voice when he sings a particular song plus the lyrics (e.g. Sometimes It Snows in April and I Love U But I Don’t Trust U Anymore).

Yes! Definitely these two.

Still to this day, the entire song
Sometimes It Snows In April (SISIA).

And I don't know why the last part of Gold when he leads into his guitar solo [this solo gets me every time] and him singing the the final parts:

(Na na na na na na na na) [repeat]

You are now an official member of the New Power Generation
Welcome 2 The Dawn

All that glitters ain't gold (Gold) [repeat & loop]

Gets me in all in my emotions..

I don't think they "always" do, but there's a few Prince songs that pretty frequently get me all teary eyed. Or close to it. One is Gold. Specifically the chorus and verses 2 and 3. Those things give me chills every time.

Another one is The Love We Make. Verses 4 and 5. cry

And then there's It's Gonna Be Lonely. The part in verse one, where he talks about it taking forever to get you off my mind. That and the part about the insecurity. Oh, and the first three parts of verse 2. The kicker though, is the ending. Where he singing it's gonna be lonely, baby, so lonely, baby. And the ooh ooh(probably spelled it wrong, but y'all get it) ending part. That song(music) has been turning me into a little girl cool for damn near 40 years. cry I guess i was a sensitive kid.

There's more, but I'll leave it at this. Annie Christian. That whole song gets to me. Especially the music. And doubly the ending guitar part(right after the last vocals). That and the ending claps, piano and synthesizer(especially the fade out synth sounds). To my ears AC is one of the best new wave, post punk, punk funk, electro funk, or whatever the hell you wanna call it, songs ever made. The whole atmosphere of that song is...strange?Or to me. Moving.

i feel the same way about Annie Christian...he's playing some tritones and diminished chords on guitar and keyboard that give it that dark sound...masterpiece

Right on RJOrion. wildsign I hate to say this, but in terms of knowing notes(hearing something and knowing what note it is), chords, modes, etc etc etc, I'm pretty much a novice. I understand basic things like middle C, what an octave consists of, what sharps and flats are, what triads are, and certain feelings that certain chords(major-minor) bring about, but that's about it. It's like after 40 plus years of listening to music, I'm JUST starting to REALLY try to understand and learn music theory(and all that goes with it-and at my age its HARD), and what I'm actually hearing. Stuff i should have learned in my youth. In my youth, my mindset was that instead of hearing a note, chord, melody, scale or sound etc, and trying to figure out what those things consisted of, i would just groove out to the sounds, and just leave it at that. I was too lazy to do the work and practice and learn. And man do i regret that now. Music wise, i mess around a little bit(mainly DAW's), but man, its much, much much better to have a firm understanding of what is what. And the theory behind that what.

So, yeah. Vaguely, i can kind of make out a few things that are going on in Annie Christian. And after all these years, I'm still pretty amazed at how cool it sounds. And how creative Prince really was. Concerning AC, i have thought to myself, "can you imagine Michael Jackson or Rick James coming up with a song like AC"? And the answer was, hell no!!!

Prince really was about that business.

Thanks for your post, RJ.

hug Depression is so horrible. If you've never had it, it's mystifying. If you have, it's mystifying.

Thanks, ol' pal. So true...

I know this is all subjective but there are certain parts in prince songs that always put a tear in my eye especially if I myself am not in a great place at the time would be interested to hear what yours are?

The buildup just before he goes into the final verse of Dolphin with the music dropping back to his voice "How beautiful do the words have to be... before they conquer every heart..." then the music flows back in - you can really hear and feel the emotion in what he is singing that part, especially when you think about the 'slave' time when this was recorded. That was one of his cry out moments...

Beautiful.

We all come from the same December - and in then end that's where we'll go - so let's go... CRAZY!

Another one that gets me is the intro to Sometimes It Snows in April. I guess it's Wendy's (?) breathy sighing. It reminds me of the body exhaling the soul at the moment of death. Always makes me think of my mom's passing.

The "magic trio" nailed that song in one take. It's just ethereal, gorgeous and sad all at once. Amazingly, recorded on April 21st sad Prince dedicated this song to Lisa's Brother David, who had just passed away, when he played it during his acoustic set in LA on the Musicology tour. If you watch the video you can see that when he starts the song he takes a deep breath inward as if to stop himself from crying cry
