3121 - title meaning obvious from official discography

I posted several years ago that I was convinced that 3121 was a reference to the album number at the time, that being 31, although my only guess for 21 (being a mirror of the track numbers) was hardly convincing.

Then, when having a gander at the official Prince discography page yesterday, it hit me...

3121... he had now made 31 albums, with 21 additional albums for other artists. I’m now absolutely convinced that’s what it was. It was such a rock and roll cliche at the time, its probably why it was never explained.

Sure, I doubt Prince was counting the same way his official discographers are, but right now, at the point of release according to his discography page, 3121 was album 31-19. And there are two glaring undisputed omissions from that page - the Carmen Electra and Mayte albums. Had those been there, it’s 31-21.

There are other issues with the associated discography, and how Prince may have counted these, which you could argue endlessly. There is no half-Prince third Sheila E. album, or Elisa Fiorillo’s half-Prince but Chrysalis released I Am. Nor of course are there two NPG related releases (Orchestra, NPS), which the discography puts into his main list. (Prince may have counted the Larry and Chaka albums are part of one release, his New Power Pak)

Some are obviously keen to argue that Newpower Soul is an associated album and that Prince always viewed it as such. Not a problem, take it away and promote The Truth to full album status. 31 again. Etc.

Yes, you have to make a few calls to get to the number, but then so did Prince.

3rd Eye Girl was the name of his last band.

1 less than 3 is 2.

2 eyes was in fact the number of eyes he had.

1 is how many less that is than the number of eyes in the band name.

Yeah, definitely not a coincidence, but that’s after the fact. Sort of like him naming his sixth album after the Purple Rain Tour.

I also wouldn’t have put it past him to have included all eligible associated albums in his list, but only counted as a half those he only contributed a half of (in the grand artist counting tradition that goes back at least as far as Fellini). Which means I Am, May 19 1992, Pandemonium and Sheila 3 all count as half. 31-21 still.

The chance of this being a coincidence, especially as this was an album naming vogue at the time (perhaps still is), must be close to zero.

Psalm 31:21

Blessed be Jehovah, For he has rendered wonderful loving-kindness to me in a city under stress.

Proverbs 31:21

She does not fear for her household because of the snow, for all her household are clothed with double garments.

2 Chronicles 31:21

In everything that he undertook in the service of God’s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered.

Seems most likely to be a bible reference.

I believe he renamed his house 3121 - it wasn't the actual house number.

Much like 1999 and other songs, Prince tends to meld end of the world themes/prophecies into his music. For the 3121 instance, this is a reference to the Mayan Calendar, where the end of the world was supposed to occur on December 21st, 2012.

Here is the breakdown on 3121

3 = a date - 3 numbers representing day/month/year

121 - 12/21/12 - that entire date exists within the numbers 121

Yes it was an address, but it was fake address he used on that home at the time.

Prince delved deep into metaphysics in his post 1999 work, and thought about this date as a new birth, not the end of everything, but the start of something new, something better. A transformation into a higher dimension, where time no longer exists. Themes that his music is loaded with. David Icke was a metaphysical author he was heavy into at the time, and even invited him to one of his shows. As a side note to this post, David Icke talked about this concert in a youtube video recently. David has always been able to see energy around poeple, their auras, etc. He reported that the light and energy coming off of Prince was like nothing he had ever witnessed before.

For example, in the song Compassion, this is a direct reference to moving into the 4th dimension. "As zero point approaches, and the fields around you drop, thoughts become reality, and it feels like time has stopped." Moving into this 4th dimesions is a very common theme in metaphysics.

Taking 3121 lyrics at face value, they are about a party, but taking Princes' thought process into consideration, his habit of hiding meaning in his lyrics, the title of the track itself, the time period it was released, the fact that he has spoken about a lot of far out, prophetic, metaphysical things in his music in the past, and it starts to become clear. In Prince's mind, this end date is cause for celebration as it would catapult us in the "new world" that he also speaks of constantly, a world of universal love, etc, where thoughts are reality, and telepathy is common, where time does not exist, etc, as mentioned in the Compassion lyrics above....among other songs.

Without going into detail, here are some supporting examples of Prince metaphysical/on the fringe themes on themes in his music.

The Akashic Records - no this is not a record company, its an etheric record of all thoughts and actions every soul that has ever existed resides in. He mentioned the Akashic Records on The Rainbow Children album.

The Third Eye, need I say more? The group, the song, and lyrically mentioned in many others.

Chakras

Astral travelling - mentioned many times in his music, and I believe there was an interview back in the day where he said he was able to do this at will. You know what? I believe it, the dude was superhuman.

He constantly talks about the barriers of reality coming down to reveal something else, many many many songs.

One Song quote

"I am the universe, the sun the moon and sea, I am the energy, for that is what I breathe, I can be contradiction, if that is all I see, but I am the universe, and the universe is me"

COMPASSION lyrics

"As zero point approaches, and the fields around you drop, thoughts become reality and it feels like time has stopped" more eveidence of the metaphysics

Universal love, universal unconscious, time not existing, themes so prevelant in his music.

3121 - "put your clothes in the pile on the floor" Metaphysics has been talking about a shift into the 4th dimension for a very long time, this shift has also been correlated to the religous rapture. Where people will vanish, leaving nothing but their clothes. Prince forever melding the spirtitual, religous, and metaphyiscal, the pile of clothes on the floor could indeed represent this. I don't think naked parties were on the agenda for JW's.

Also from 3121 - "you can come if you want to, but you can never leave" - are we to believe that Prince is planning to hold hostage anyone who comes to this party, never letting them leave? No, whether looking at this from a religous or metaphysical aspect, either way, your soul has to be ready for the transition, otherwise your are left behind, so, "you can come if you want to" (if you are ready), but "you can never leave". meaning, once you make that transition, there is no going back, as 'this' is now your new reality.

These are a few of many examples supporting Prince's metaphysical beliefs and/or interests.

So Prince using 3121 as a disguise for 12/21/12 is not far fetched at all. Whether Prince believed anything would really happen on that date of not, who knows, but it's always intersting to dig deeper into his lyrics and to discuss the possible meaning behind them. I cannot think of any other artist that keeps us on our toes like Prince does.

At the the very least, this is a possible theory some of you may not have considered. Does it make it true? No, but there is more than enough supporting lyrical evidence, thematic evidence, historical evidence, and evidence as to what he was into and reading at the time that make it a possibility.

Peace

His 31st album.
Released on the 21st of March, 2006. 31/21

3+1+2+1 = 7

Toss in the Bible verses. It all comes together.

I think it's a numerical thing that appealed to him.
Album, house, on his clothing.

Prince loved symmetry.....so not surprising at all that he would choose to release an album entitled 3121 on that exact corresponding date. Good stuff.

And he died on the queens birthday 4/21.

The queen celebrates 2 birthdays, her real one on 4/21, and the other one in June has been celebrated since 1788, when Governor Arthur Phillip declared a holiday to mark the birthday of the King of Great Britain. Until 1936, it was held on the actual birthday of the monarch, but, after King George V died, it was decided to keep the date on the second Monday in June.

I like this discussion. I think there is a hidden message in the lettering on the back of his jacket on the 3121 album cover. I can't figure it out, but the shape of the letters means something. Nothing he does is a coincidence. Some of you were making fun of a thread I started about messages with his track/album lengths, we gave you dozens of examples that were not mere coincidences.

This has been discussed previously here, with speculation that the representation of 3121 was also stylised to look similar to the tetragrammaton in Hebrew (YHWH in latin) i.e. Jehovah

Who was his clothing designer at this time?
They would know.
Anthony Sartino designed the turquoise Super Bowl suit with the black embroidery; I've emailed him to ask if he designed the 3121 jacket.
