So i think Prince is one of the best guitar players that ever wal;ked on planet Earth,at the same time i dont think Wendy is good enough to criticize Prince as a guitarist and that makes me want to start a fight?

Yes. | |

well that is your opinion. my opinion is that Wendy while being a decent rhythm guitar player was never on a level to comment Prince as a guitarist. if you watch The Revolution reunion shows you can see that she still has hard time when she tries to play lead guitar. on rhythm guitar she is quite good i must admit.
I think Prince was always really good on guitar and he always knew what he was doing. He did improve over time but its not like he was lacking anything during the early days, Prince had really good phrasing, technique, speed ,overall dexterity on guitar and he always knew what he was doing on guitar.

Well at least she does play an instrument and she is a professional musician. That reflects my reply to another thread where I wondered how come only fans diss Prince's or his band's musical skills when most of them aren't musicians themselves, and what was their cred when talking about music skills. Funnily enough I also said I'd never heard a professional musician or former associate criticize Prince's skills, and you just proved me wrong. As far as I know it's a first, though. . On the other hand I just heard an interview of Lisa where she says Prince was "the best guitar player in the world" (she also praised Wendy's skills), so I think Wendy may be trolling a little here because she knows what Lisa knows and vice versa. It'd be nice to have the quote in context, though, or to ask her to elaborate on that to know what she meant exactly because out of the blue we don't learn much by her comment, and it's a pîty. Maybe she refers to certain things she knew how to do but he didn't, while the other way around was certainly true for other things? . On the other hand your comments on Wendy are a little strange, too, because at most, the "worst" Prince guitar player still means "way better than your average player", and I also would like to know how you know the exact situation of Wendy's skill in 2019. I mean it's OK to say such things if they are true, but if you don't elaborate and explain us why you're legitimate to talk about guitar skills and why she's that bad, it's no more useful to us than Wendy's comment or me talking about astrophysics when I have no real knowledge of astrophysics. Not to give you shit or anything, just saying I wanna believe you but you have to convince me. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

"As far as calisthenics go, I always felt Prince was one of those rare athletic players who was extremely dexterous, but always made every note count for something. Even when he was playing something tricky, it wasn’t banal.

Well ive seen videos of Wendy playing on the Revolution reunion gigs and while her rhythm guitar playing is tight, her soloing still leave a lot to be desired. She is not bad as a rhythm guitar player she is very good, she only sux at guitar solos.i dont know if im legitimate but i do know how to play guitar so what im saying is just my opinion and nobody has 2 agree.

I apologize but I'm not sure I understand your reply. Which quote is wrong? My Lisa quote? I heard it today in this 10 essential songs podcast. Thx for the link and the context of the quotation though, but then I don't understand why you're shooting Wendy down like this. In context what she says isn't that bad, and to be honest I'm not even sure how to interpret it. But OK, nevermind, it's cool. Thx for the link again. ok, well back to the topic, she meant it as a compliment as I already explained.

OK. Well I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and explain what the quote you gave says and what most of us took from it versus what you implied it said in your opening post: . Wendy said:
"As far as calisthenics go, I always felt Prince was one of those rare athletic players who was extremely dexterous, but always made every note count for something. Even when he was playing something tricky, it wasn’t banal. . The interviewer is complimenting Prince on his guitar playing for having meaning, in that he didn't ever showboat (show off just for attention) with his guitar playing, and that when he played guitar even when soloing or playing something tricky or skilled, he would do so with purpose and the notes would be played for a reason, not just to show off for the sake of it. Wendy is in complete agreement with the interviewer. ("Yes, it's true!"). When she says that she looked over at him (in concert or rehearsal say), she would often be in amazement at his skill and ability and how easy it came to him ("you don't even know what you're doing right now!"). She then goes on to say that later in life his skill and control only grew. . At no point is Wendy criticizing or saying Prince didn't know how to play. Her reply is nothing but complimentary to someone she knew personally, worked with, respected and admired.

It's a compliment......like when you ask someone after they finish playing something amazing, "where did that come from???" and the reply is, "i dont know, it just happened". "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

but if it was a compliment why did she add that latter on he become a master of fretboard? thats the confusing part 4 me

I actually kinda agree - but that's part of the reason I love Prince's early guitar work. Musically he was all over the place sometimes, some of the earlier guitar solos sound all kinds of wrong but he pulled it off. Sounded awesome. Definitely very self-taught, not all the notes made sense but that's part of the charm of his playing in those days. I prefer his earlier guitar work for that reason. His later career playing is incredible no doubt, but I have such a soft spot for the eccentric earlier stuff.

Proper context? Sometimes the lack of reading comprehension on this board shocks me. . If you read the article, it's obvious this is a Q&A interview. The interviewer asks Wendy the non-question: As far as calisthenics go, I always felt Prince was one of those rare athletic players who was extremely dexterous, but always made every note count for something. Even when he was playing something tricky, it wasn’t banal. . Wendy answers: "Yes, it’s true! Sometimes he had moments where I’d look over and he’d be going for it and I’d laugh to myself and say, “You don’t even know what you’re doing right now!” But by the time he passed, he was undoubtedly a true master at the neck of the guitar. He just knew the thing so damn well." . It's a dumb answer to an observation by the interviewer. She wasn't trying to throw shade at P, she just is not very good at expressing herself. Later on in the interview, she rambled on about how his guitar playing "would always blow [her] mind." So which was it, Wendy? . There's even a part in the interview (page 2) where she alleges she wrote the hook and the triplet guitar solo to Computer Blue, but she found it difficult to play the duel solo live ("her albatross!"), while Prince was able to pull it off every time. Again, which was it, Wendy? . . Wendy was always an OK guitarist, hired in part because she was a white female, not because she was a budding guitar god. Prince wanted a Family Stone-like band. He gambled with her and it paid off. But for her to be flippant about Prince not knowing what he's doing with a guitar is fucking ridiculous.

I agree with you that there is word placement that confused me too. The bit about her laughing to herself, the “but” placement and Like you mentioned the use of “but” the time he passed he was a master implies that he wasn’t yet. I see the confusion semantically. Like I said, she's not very good at words. She doesn't seem to know how to express herself. When she uses the word "but" in this sentence... . "Yes, it’s true! Sometimes he had moments where I’d look over and he’d be going for it and I’d laugh to myself and say, “You don’t even know what you’re doing right now!” But by the time he passed, he was undoubtedly a true master at the neck of the guitar. He just knew the thing so damn well." . ...it sounds an awful lot like she's qualifying the first half of her thought which was that Prince was just winging it on guitar until later in his career. I've always been taught that the word 'but' is used to introduce a phrase or idea that contrasts with what has already been mentioned in the first part of a statement. It's basic sentence structure. . But it sounds like you know exactly what she meant so I'll defer to your interpretation. . All that said, I'd bet she'd never say anything like that if Prince was alive to respond. Big words coming from a guitarist who couldn't play the solo she claimed to have written.
