Prince didnt know what he was doing on guitar during the early days

According to Wendy Melvoin :

Sometimes he had moments where I’d look over and he’d be going for it and I’d laugh to myself and say, “You don’t even know what you’re doing right now!” But by the time he passed, he was undoubtedly a true master at the neck of the guitar.

Premier Guitar magazine

So according to Wendy Prince didnt know what he

was doing when he was shredding.

Says a girl who until to this day didnt learn how to play guitar

solos and she was the worst guitar player Prince had.

I don’t think this was meant in a rude way. I think he became much better at guitar by Lovesexy era. On the PR tour he would stretch it to nearly half an hour. I don’t doubt that he was just fucking around on the guitar (not saying it was bad in any way) just unrefined.

Well.... we know he improved, and we know that PR era he had some moments where he looked out of his mind... he was definitely guilty of laying sloppy and playing what weren't actual chords...but that's how you end up with PR in the first place.

What she meant was it came so naturally to him that his playing was better than his understanding of what he was doing, it was pure instinct. It's a fucking compliment! I've heard people say the same about Johnny Marr actually.

Stop trying to cause a fight, MODERATOR hammer lol

have to say I agree, it was raw, it was funky as hell & full on attack - a man on a mission & a really great contract to his mastery & precison in later years.

Listen to Hendrix live - rough as fuck with many mis-hits....but still incredible.

Likewise Wendy I have to say is such a funky player & likewise he accoustic chord play & use of scales is beautifully melodic.

As so often: unpolished is better.
Even if he became a 'master' later on: give me the earlier work every day of the year!

It'd rather say about Neil Young, that he didn't know what he was doing on guitar in the early days. But he knows that.

There are different levels of “knowing what to do on the guitar”...

Some players may know only the graphic patterns of the chords and scales. Others know the name of every note they use while playing, and its harmonic role against the chords. Then there is a category of real talents who hear a melody in their head and can transfer that to the instrument without thinking in patterns, note names or theory at all.

In his early years (and possibly also later), Prince belonged to the first and third category. With her remarks, Wendy probably tried to express that she was part of category two...

PS
Do piano players who use cluster chords during improvisation exactly know what they are playing...? Expressive means on any instrument may go beyond conventional theoretical rules

If u mean ...early days...Around PR Days...Prince was already a true Master on guitar....he just played in an enj way during these years...full of rage...before becoming a master in a melodic way the following years ...it was even in his younger age and all his carrier a terrific and a higher master in rhythm guitar technic....Prince was better thsn Hendrix because his ability to play in so different styles in an higher level!

as much as i love wendy and lisa .. what a load ... i recall reading that prince impressed his high school mates with a fluid ability to play the current hot guitar solos on the radio .. furthermore .. wendy and lisa are a bit of that stuck up training .. which is why wendy thinks her way through her guitar playing instead of feeling it .. they know about music theory but her licks are choppy like an over thinker would play .. prince was very fluid on guitar and could bust out a great solo when not thinking too much but now reading this i wonder if wendy stuck up music education is why prince tends to play such tame and lame guitar solos in general .. i have always felt he was great when he turned off his brain and went for it .. hof is a good example of this .. but when he lays down a solo on wax it is often a bit mundane .. i bet having wendy in his head made him too much of a perfectionist to really go for it like he used to .. i hate stuck up musicians .. especially classical music enthusiasts .. what a bunk art form .. some rich king pays whatever lame ass musician there is to kiss his ass and entertain him .. the real music always comes from the streets .. sophisticated music is for people who think they are better than themselves yet cant tell that classical music is often rooted in very simple structer with predictable counter melodies and modulations .. its as formulaic as 3 chord blues yet put enough bells and whistles in it and some king will clap and all the musical intilectuals can feel smarter than anyone .. wendy has talent but her execution is rough at best ... everyone knows the best music comes from mistakes made .. that is invention .. wish prince didn't get so full of himself and safe ... too bad wendy a little full of herself these days

This article is from October 2017 and your quote is wrong, and completely out of context.

Wendy said:

"As far as calisthenics go, I always felt Prince was one of those rare athletic players who was extremely dexterous, but always made every note count for something. Even when he was playing something tricky, it wasn’t banal.
Yes, it’s true! Sometimes he had moments where I’d look over and he’d be going for it and I’d laugh to myself and say, “You don’t even know what you’re doing right now!” But by the time he passed, he was undoubtedly a true master at the neck of the guitar. He just knew the thing so damn well."

Nothing Wendy says will ever be enough for these people, I don't fully understand it, but it's kind of calming or something to have the same argument year in and year out.

-

Do you (know how to) play the guitar ?

Do you know what she/others/we/I are talking about, technically ?

...then you must know,

that she made a HUGE compliment!

-

Try to READ what's written in that article (in Premier Guyitar Magazine),

and try to understand whàt actually is being said/stated.

-

I don't like people who try to make a saint out of Prince and bash others for it.

The guy had many qualities, but evenso bad ones.

And no i'm not talking about his guitar skills, they are of this earth!

(before you start baching me or others)

wink

Peace though.

.Wendy was like yeah you are right but u know what he didnt know

And i dont know why r u still on org ,when Prince was alive you were making only negative
