1. the police hat with the chains over the face
2. the checkerboard poncho from the Elephants & Flowers scene in Grafitti Bridge
3. the fluffy fur jacket from the If I Was Your Girlfriend video

Yes, indirectly it is. It is an insult to Prince's legacy to sell all this crap BEFORE they start putting out his actual work.
.

I couldn't care less about the T-shirts, purple vinyl rereleases etc. and sorry, but it makes my blood boil to see these things before they'd start a professional release program for all the unheard masters from the vault. We are talking about one of the most prolific artists in music history, with a legendary vault of unreleased material – and as many of us here said before: we are not getting any younger.
.

I feel you guys, obviously I'd choose music over gadgets and clothes any time, it's just that we don't need to create a false dilemma (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_dilemma). The Estate is not holding on the music music because they're releasing gadgets, and releasing more gadgets would not prevent them from releasing more music.

.

The estate is in dire need of healthy, sustainable revenue stream. Trying to achieve that with merchandising and reprinted albums that don't offer anything extra (and making everything purple is certainly no added value, in fact it's boring and stupid) before they start putting out genuine vault releases is making them lazy, thinking that they'll be able to get away with this for years.
.
I am not against merchandising at all – I'm just strongly against focusing on that before genuine vault releases start to appear. The real and sustainable revenue potential is in the latter.

a) he tried it in the early 90s with Joe Bloggs range of clothing - it bombed

b) none of the clothes (including his own) was THAT expensive. In fact, I thought a lot of it looked quite cheap despite the wild designs

I assumed they'd be expensive because of Prince being Prince, but I have no idea. I know some brands that look really great but are accessible so fancy doesn't need to be expensive.

.
Most of Prince's clothes that were made for him by his own people are relatively cheap and weren't made to a high standard. If you examine them closely you'll see that the seams aren't straight, uneven, they were put together quickly with little attention to the finest details.
Because that's how stage costumes are made – they serve a purpose, to look great and unique from a distance. But you couldn't get away with selling stuff like that, especially not at such inflated prices the estate is charging.

.

Another thing: the vast majority of Prince's clothing was tailor-made for him and as we know, he was tiny. Scaling those clothes to fit us average adults would result in them looking ridiculous, and let's be honest, some of them looked ridiculous on Prince too. And creating many different sizes that they would need to produce, and having them made to a professional standard with attention to detail and using high quality fabrics would mean ridiculously high costs too.
.
They've reproduced the NPG jersey, that's selling for $200 and I can't say they've done a great job at that, they didn't even pay attention to copy the shape of the big NPG-logo exactly from the original. I imagine that if they would reproduce something far more complex and requiring far more expensive textiles than a hockey jersey, they would end up looking awful and costing above a grand, especially if it'd be a suit of some sort.
.

Some of his tour outfits could pass as pyjamas, so maybe those

and perhaps the trench coat as a bath robe?

Only worn in private though biggrin

There's actually a name for that in theatre: the 30-foot rule. As long as something (costumes, set pieces, props, etc.) looks good from 30 feet away, you're golden. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

This is probably all true but quite depressing. I have 2 objections though.

.

Regarding the 30-foot rule as Gen calls it: Prince wore those fancy clothes in everyday life not just on stage, so I don't think that they were made to look cheap up close, that would have defeated the purpose of keeping him in character 24/7.

.

Regarding P's size it maight be true for some of his own suits but the same esthetics was maintained for all bandmembers and they looked good as well.

I actually wore it this past Saturday night when Questlove was at the Blue Note Hawaii (he did not play any Prince on Saturday night, in fact, I would not pay to go see him again). I don't have any photos, I was not feeling well. I do plan to take this jacket and other Prince inspired outfits I have made, with me to Minneapolis in June.

Sorry about being disrespectful to your thread, I'm just really frustrated that the vault is going to waste. To answer your question, very few people would look good in Prince inspired clothes. Perhaps a petite woman, but no one wants to see middle aged men wearing the Kiss outfit. Anthony Anderson is evidence of that.

Are you nuts? I would like this WDC black Brando jacket, please.
Oh, and the '86 Canary Pimp suit, or maybe the Cherry one.
Pair of Blue Suede Boots with the glyph on the zippa? Sure.
But with the low heels, please.

the "Gangster Glam" video is an amazing piece of music history... Prince doing pushups poolside while wearing a mankini, as Tony M stands so close-by in the water with his pimp-cane...how cool do you have to be, to carry a pimp-cane under water??...the legendary N.P.G.
