Let's be honest, Prince's days of being watched by "millions of teenage girls" were long gone by 2006.

And yes, I don't even understand how 'Lolita' is even part of this discussion above. Have you guys never actually listened to its lyrics? Its very clear message is "if you're underage, don't even try, I'm not interested".

Oh OK, sorry.

Oh right, so that was his message to the millions of teenage girls watching

Lyrically, that claim and reading is simply not substantiated, Dodger. The song explicitly and obviously conveys a message opposed to underage sex. The lyrics aren't at all ambiguous or cryptic.

Yes, I know that but it's not a subject I'm keen on listening to and singing along to. Same with Schoolyard

How is schoolyard inappropriate when he was 16 and she was 14 in the song! That is a two year age difference! confused

Exactly.

'Schoolyard' is unreleased and is a nostalgic reminisence. It's not narrated from an adult point of view to a school child. 'Circle of Amour' is a way better song on that kind of theme though.

So it’s appropriate to sing about a 14 year old like that

So when an author or joblo reminisce about their fist sexual experience and their first crush they're being inappropriate....OH THE REACH!

Well, of course. Though in my (and Prince's) school days, not as many of them were ... uh ... "active." (If you know what I mean.) There was still a HUGE stigma attached to the potential consequences back then.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Have you listened to Prince? Do you understand the concept of a reminiscence? lol

And for every Schoolyard, there's a Young and Beautiful.

Yes to both.
You are the first reply on this thread saying you find 'this side...to be problematic' so your views can't be much different to mine.
.
Whether Schoolyard is fiction or reminiscing I'm not keen on the lyric of a 16 year old male explaining how tight a 14 year old girl is. But that's just me

Good lord. The song was written over 30 years ago and was never released. (Think there was a reason for that?) If someone hadn't stolen it in the first place, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

The song is a work of fiction. You know...like the entire Purple Rain movie. Are you outraged by Darling Nikki, too? How about Come and Girl - complete with slurping? Lady Cab Driver sounds frighteningly #metoo - or worse. Should we resurrect the PMRC?

Or how about we just be grown-ups and don't listen to things we don't like - especially since the artist is dead and can't reply?

This guy in here really talking about what he's comfortable hearing prince sing about. The man said it himself, "I say anything I want to. Don't fuck with me I'll slap ya."

I'm not with guest censorship shit y'all seem to love these days.

His quota is a constant attempt to appear edgy or relevant. He's failed miserably on both fronts.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
