Thoughts on some of the Gold Experience single edits?

Specifically the title track (Gold) and I Hate U. Are they good edits in your opinion, especially since the actual tracks run so long?

A certain kind of mellow.

Yeah, I prefer the "Alternate Radio Mix with Guitar Solo" version of "Gold" because it cuts a more blatantly religious verse and brings the song to a more palatable length, but it preserves the tasty guitar solo (which is gone on some other edits).

I also prefer the "Album Edit" of "I Hate U" because that's another track that runs too long for me.

In the '80s I dug all the extended versions and wanted everything to be longer, but later I was finding that edits to trim excesses helped improve songs. I have not heard the rare promo edits of "Dolphin," "We March," and "Endorphinmachine" mentioned on the Prince Vault site, but I'd like to.

For me, I Hate U is one of the man's very best songs. I always felt the album version was perfect in length and built brilliantly to its fraught climax.

I feel the same with Gold. Although it's not as strong a song, it builds well in the album version. Funny that scratchtasia felt them to be too long... that's never occurred to me once.

Therefore, for me, the single edits were never as effective. I have them for novelty/collector value, really. But for me they don't work anywhere near as well as the 'proper' versions.

What is interesting is the Extended Remix of I Hate U, which isn't quite as good as the original but takes some interesting detours of its own...

I prefer the remix version over the album version but sometimes I´m in a different mood and then I prefer the album version but I don´t really like the edit versions of Gold Experience songs. They all feel a bit cut off to me.

The extended remix of I Hate U is a really interesting take on the original with its booming bass and especially with those funny ad-libs "U gave a dog a place to bone and now your ass is all alone" . The Forrest Gump line about the feather floating through the air is funny , too, and I love how he sings "...floating through the air.." . The album version sounds a bit more timeless but I love both.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I always prefer the unedited full experience.

The edits always leave me wanting and frustrated...

and yesterday's too far away

Yes. Eye Hate U is quintessential Prince. The tone, the lyrics, the love, the hate, and especially the angry sex guitar solo. This track is right up there with The Beautiful Ones as asong that represents Prince as an artist. TGE shouldve been a massive success, but the botching timing of the TMBGITW and the late release of TGE was just silly.

(Insert something clever here)

There are also promo edits for Endorphinmachine, Dolphin and We March (that's from memory, I may forget a few others).

To the fans who collect everything (such as myself) the edits are important as they are clean.

From memory the single edit of ''I Hate U'' omits the NPG operator voice-over and sound effects.

The CD Maxi Single of "Eye Hate U" has the album version without segue and sound effects

"New Power slide...."

The commercial CD single has the 4:43min single edit.

The USA promo CD and promo 12inch singles have the following edits:

Gold (Radio Edit With Guitar Solo) : 4:23
Gold (Alternate Radio Mix With Guitar Solo) : 4:37
Gold (Radio Edit Without Guitar Solo) : 4:44

I mentioned those in Reply #1. They appear to be super-rare. Has anyone here heard them? Even the Prince Vault site lacks track timing info for the "Dolphin" and "We March" edits.

I love the full version of Gold. Actually, I wish the ‘Na Na Na’ coda would go on longer. I felt like we waited forever to actually hear the song because it was talked about for such a long time before it was finally released.
