The SB Performance has been in the Top 5 of many all time Super Bowl performance articles but as the years go by it is number one on more and more of the lists. It has become a measuring stick and one really hard to measure up to.

Didn't care for the non-Prince songs, even though the performance was incredible and the risk of falling on one's butt was high for Prince and the dancers.

The rain I guess added something, but I've always wondered how much better or maybe just different it would have been without. I think the reason why he did covers is because he knew his audience. The majority of those at home, watching, and at the stadium, were not Prince fans. They may have known Purple Rain, and a couple of other songs, but the majofirty of Prince's catalog was unknown to them. He picked covers, that I thought, would play well with the NFL fans (especially those country folk) and the older NFL fans.

I thought it was the best Sports Ball performance ever but pretty mediocre by Prince's standards. I watched it again the other day and the sound is awful. The band is buried low in the mix and the guitar is way too loud. Vocals were great as always. If you listen to it without looking at it you'll see how poopy it was.

I think so too and also that he wanted to show his range and diversity on a large stage like that. When he was announced, I was trying to come up with a set list that would work and was having trouble. An all hits performance would have been boring and, like you said, not really in the wheelhouse of your average NFL fan.

I thought of a few lesser known, more recent numbers that might have worked (Get on the Boat, Love, Feel Better Feel Wonderful) but nobody knows those tracks and it might left the audience cold. He mixed it up well and showed a nice range in the limited time he had. I was really glad to see then guitar out front so much.

And god damn, was I the only one that was terrified he was gonna slip in those heels on that wet stage? And the only one that wondered if the lightening strike was real?

And, yeah, the mix was wobbly in parts but the difference between Prince and all the other shit we usually get spoonfed to us during these things is that prince and his band we actually playing. IN the pouring rain.

The Chili Peppers with Bruno weren't even plugged in, some of the other legends who have played live sucked out loud (Stones, the WHo) and usually it's just piped in pre-recorded bullshit with over the top choreography.

I feel like I used to remember more people acknowledging the out-of-tune guitar at the time. Visually stunning, yes, but I always get distracted by that guitar on the solo and I'm not even close to being a stringent technical "musician" type. It just sounds wrong.
