And those opening thunderous drums. And those creamy synth strings. And the intermttent psychadelic strains. "Climb in my fur."

Apollonia is playing Vanity. A strong singer is not her story. What?

I was watching a critique of Prince somewhere and the guy stated that he wasn't a fan of Purple Rain because it was too white and used Take Me With U as the perfect example as to why. He showed the concert video and said, Look at them. They love that sh!t!"

Yes and No on that one. I read that once they cast Apollonia they made some changes to the script, because she was a different personality and they wanted to make it less "dark". Either way, it's true that neither were strong singers. The story of that character was a beautiful girl trying to become a "star".

Lmao... I can see how they tried to plug pop and new wave into it what with the initial beginning when he is preaching in Let’s Go Crazy. There’s a myriad of white new wavers up in there etc etc. I can imagine the rock kind of put some of the brothas off as they were probably expecting funkdified Prince and Time only. Hell they were all warned as it was reported in black based magazines saying that prince music was changing to be more accessible for the masses to make the movie successful. "Climb in my fur."

A song probably near 100% of people can relate to at some point, with music to match the feeling. That is a perfect (and timeless) pop song. ...but then to package it with the other gems on Purple Rain = utter brilliance.

Well, he does have that lyric, "you never woulda drank my coffee if I didn't serve you cream..."

Agreed. The audience response during the Syracuse concert in 1985 is a testament to the pop genius of that song. They went absolutely nuts. The whole arena was jumping up and down in unison. A great moment. It also drew a great crowd response when he played it in later years.

"What's My Name" - Prince (recorded just before he changed to ) *
Take my name, I don't need it
Nothing stays the same anyway Take my fame, I can't use it My girlfriend calls me lame, the game was over yesterday Tell me, what's my name?
Tell me, what's my name? What's my name? Take this bass, I can't play it
It only makes me wish for the way it used to be you could slap my face, but I got to say it you never would have drank my coffee if I had never served you cream Now tell me, what's your name?
Tell me, what's your name? What's your name? What's your name? Come on! Do you dream in color or do you discriminate?
Do you love others, do you love or do you hate? Do you worship fire or do you worship a dove? Do you live a liar or do you live for love? What's your name?
What's my name?
What's your name? | |

I don't care if somebody changed Canada to New Orleans, or cut the anal scene. Prince had the rocky relationship to stardom with Denise, not Patricia. What?

Actually, Prince met Denise 5+ years after he signed his record deal with WB. So, if you're talking about his "rocky relationship" to stardom with women you're going to have to include Kim Upsher and Susan Moonsie too, as they were there long before Vanity.

WHAT A SCENE!!! "I like to watch."

Wonder why they changed the dialogue from the psychic bit to the other. I actually like the original better. Also, were the lyrics to the song actually written into the original script like that?? Curious, because he didn't record the song until end of January 1984. That would be interesting given the fact that he usually came up with lyrics as he was recording his songs.

No, I added the lyrics to see how they flowed with the scene
