Ive played PR a million times. At parties. At bbq's. Smoke outs. Camp outs. Jerk outs. Watched the movie in mixed company, tricked company.

Nobody has EVER made mention of Apollonia's vocals as a negative.

Y'all are a special breed.

c'mon baby, where's ya guts?

I don't think she had a terrible voice at all - just not a strong singer, which is understandable because that was not what she aspired to be - she wanted to be an actress. Considering that, I think she did just fine on the songs, and she had the stronger singers in the camp to provide the extra vocals needed to carry the songs.

Paste an earlier post where I stated those exact words and I'll concede to your point. Not sure how a response that is agreeing with, and adding to, yours is considered to be "tres disrespectful". Ya lost me on that logic....or lack thereof. C'est la vie

How can I make this clear? You have a tendency for stating the all too obvious and it makes you appear as a wanna be know-it-all. We aren't newbies to the Prince world ya know. Now I know you want to respond to this and its gonna kill you inside to not do so. But I want you to try to feel where I am coming from and see my name and trust that of alllll the peeps you see here day in and day out, that I know exactly what I am talking about. No, I dont have chart postions as my calling card, I dont have a website with everytime prince took a shit it was recorded,....just know that when u see the name and toungue there's an ideal behind it. One that cares for the very best of things. I simply want to take you higher. Dont respond.

Please stop the cyber bullying. Seriously. I'll respond whenever and however I choose, as this is a public forum. Why are you back here if you don't want the conversations?? From the likes of your text above it would seem you're here for the purpose of just "tootnig" your own horn about your Prince knowldege. If you're annoyed by something I post then just leave it alone - no need to tell me what I'm saying annoys you.

*

Leave me alone. Find someone else to pick on, or better yet, don't pick on anyone else either. It's unbecoming, immature, and a waste of time.

Yep, I did respond to your comment, because you stated "Y'all are a special breed" with regard to the negative posts about Apollonia's voice. AGAIN, the "Reply w/ Quote" button is there for everyone to use for a reason - to generate conversation about a thread topic, especially when one makes a blanket (and negative) statement about all of the posters on the thread.

*

No one has the "definitive" word or reply here. That would be quite unfair, wouldn't it?? nod

I also have played the "Purple Rain" album hundreds and hundreds of times, although probably not a million times. I've played it at the same kind of places you have - parties; camp outs; at the movies; etc. And like you, to every kind of audience imaginable.

And also just like you, no one has ever said "Wow, Apollonia can't sing".

I guess my experience is just like yours.

Ethos

Apollonia and vocalizing should in no way be mentioned in the same sentence. Because of her, "Take Me With U" is nearly insufferable.

Indeed, and heard "Take Me With U" in 1984, and saw the movie six times. Would you like to see my Purple Rain cassette?

Right - he had to get her into the song mix somehow, because she was the female lead. So, he was smart and buried her vocal several layers deep under his, Matt's, Mark's, Wendy's, and Lisa's biggrin Well, except for the "thank you" after he sings "you're sheer perfection", although, it could still be Wendy or Lisa's voice smile

*

Even the Apollonia 6 record - Brenda, Jill, Susannah and Lisa were the main vocalists for that record. Apollonia's parts were posing for the album cover and lip syncing in the videos biggrin

Oh, and Brenda should've had a solo record!!!!!!!!!!!!

WORD!!!!

cool

ive watched the movie and listened to TMWY with different people, and more than once (especially when listening to the song) people have commented on Apollonia's shitty vocals...some people care, and some people dont... some people are indifferent to lyrics or lyricism or vocals... a great M.C. once said about music:

"...the dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum..."

Iwoukd say this is true for the majority of pop music listeners. Hence the reason why the Spice Girls and Brittany Spears sold millions of records biggrin

Apple's vocals makes the song distinguishable.

Didn't Jill do some background vocals on this song also?

Not Jill. It was Prince, Wendy, Lisa, Susannah, Matt, and Mark. Prince had the whole crew in there hiding her vocal biggrin Just kidding....I think she did fine for the song. It's meant to be a light, fun and "poppy" pop song, so her voice blends in okay. However, Jill did do backrounds on Ooh She Wa Wa for the A6 record. Brenda, with Lisa, Susannah and Jill on backrounds carried that album vocally for the most part, I think.

Purple Rain wouldn't be Purple Rain without this track, period. It's the perfect romantic cool-down after the blazing energy of the album opener. Hell, Appollonia's vocals are even charming in spite of her limitations as a singer!
