Prince: Music and More > That they think of the Unpublished song "Lisa" of 1980 for me is a pity that it was not included in Dirty Mind

'Loveleft, Loveright' always reminds me of 'Lisa'. Can't explain why. Just something about it. |

Didn't he take another guys soon to be wed gal in Head?
And I was thinking he didn't want to repeat himself so soon and chose the one of the two songs he liked best. And I agree.
Right, but my thought about the song "Lisa", if it actually was inspired by stronger feelings that he had for her at that time - Lisa was not "out" with her sexuality, so I'm guessing her partner - which was Wendy at the time, would have been referred to as a "boyfriend" and not a "girlfriend". I don't believe they tolld Prince they were a couple early on. They talked about it during their interview with Out magazine in 2009.

Head was the better song all around - both for the lyrics and how they could extend the song for his awesomely sexual performances |

I've read Org members talk about how Head would pack them in on the dance floors. Prince gave you 30 seconds to grab sombody and get down.

You mean the song "Lisa", not "Strange Way..." . Yes, but I"m still not convinced that Prnice did not develop a bit of crush on her in the beginning. Attractive, smart, funny, and talented - fully understandable if he did at least initially have stronger feelings for Lisa before he knew about her sexuality, and her relationship with Wendy. He speaks to it a bit in the lyrics for "Strange Way.." - "sometimes I want you baby, I want you sexually, but I don't want our friendship relation to suffer, can't you see..."

I can see him "crushing" on her in the very early days
Right on. Lisa dated guys before she committed to Wendy. She might have been in the closet before committed to Wendy who knows? She admitted that herself in LA Times years ago that some of the guys were frustrated with her because she was too shy and barely speak to them on the dates. She was comparing herself to Prince how they were shy and introvert. Even Lisa's parents wanted her with Prince as they didn't accept her sexuality at the time I went by one of her friends who posted on Google Groups years ago. That is so fucking cool of Lisa was going to do her and ended up dating Ms. Melvoin.
But maybe you right. Prince might have feelings for her but in the end, he thought it was best for them to have a sister and brother relationship. He was a freak. It is hard to believe Prince didn't smash her as they did lived together for a couple of years around Dirty Mind and also Lisa and Wendy started dating around 1981 and so between 1980 and early '81 anything is possible between Prince and Lisa. What about the book Possessed where there was some confession they had a sexual connection?
And also Prince did say that if you want to know him is to focus on the music and those lyrics from Strange Way was some confession toward Lisa. |

It could be. But Lisa stated in a very old LA Times that she dated guys too prior to Wendy. Yeah, people should search Wendy and Lisa on LA Times archives and they did quite a few interviews when they promoted Erotica and Fruit at the Bottom. Some interesting stuff there. What is so cool is that they weren't totally in the closet (Mountains video and they said 'our equipment in our house' was clues at least) but didn't flaunt either.
And also that can be possible too they kept their relationship a secret also since Wendy didn't tell Prince she played the guitar until he heard her sound accidentally.
What was weird that Wendy was the one who wanted to keep their relationship private as she kicked Lisa and damn I forgot which interview it was when she stated that Lisa almost outed them to a journalist. I always thought it was Lisa wanted privacy because she was the quiet one. I like both of them don't get me wrong but Lisa is so cool and chilling and quiet and dance to her own beat. Wendy got that bitchy vibe but if you get on her good side she is very passionate about the world we live in and seems caring lol. |

Wendy is just more loquacious by nature, and Lisa is naturally very pensive and quiet. I think it's a good balance for them professionally, and it worked in their personal relationship for many years. I find Wendy's stories and discussions interesting and entertaining - if that weren't the case then for sure, it would be annoying She is very passionate about the music. Interestingly, in many of their video interviews during their Eroica tour in Europe Lisa was the more talkative one in many of the interviews. If you search "wendy and lisa 1990 interviews" you'll find a bunch.

Here is their interview with Out magazine where they discuss keeping their relationship quiet for many years, and how Wendy wasn't ready to go public, but Lisa didn't care either way:

They are asked if Prince knew early on, and they said that he must have known because he was staying at their house in LA. The article has a typo though - their quote says "he wouldn't spend the night at our house. He was very much aware of it." The "wouldn't" is supposed to be "would".

This is the same interview where they dubbed Prince a "fancy lesbian". No doubt he hated that

Oh yes, I have no doubt that Prince, at least in the beginning, was physically attracted to Lisa. I think many fans get it wrong with Prince - yes of course he would always go for the blatantly beautiful/sexy girls, because he was a heterosexual guy with a huge libido - BUT, he was also a smart guy who no doubt was impressed and attracted to a girl's musical talent and intellect. Plus, Lisa was alluringly attractive back then. You see that in the 1999 video. Honestly, I think she's sexier than Jill Jones in that video. Jill was half naked and really "working" the sexual angle while Lisa appeard mysterious and cool - sexy in a less obvious way. Prince was also intrigued by and attracted to white girls by that point. He started with Jill Jones not long after she joined the camp, and then pursued Susannah not long after that.

Yes, Prince's life and feelings were all in his music. He was very cryptic in interviews and with journalists, but I think he was most honest in his lyrics. [Edited 1/20/19 8:44am] |

violetcrush -- I enjoy your posts and links. I have to run out in a moment, so I'm sorry if this comes off short, and I may also misunderstand what you're saying.
"Being free to identify as who you are is paramount to Jones, who is the headliner at Saturday’s Pride Festival scheduled for 11 a.m.-7 p.m. at Weber Point Events Center.
The product of a black mother and Italian father, Jones is fair-skinned but always has identified as black."

Yes, I know that Jill Jones is 1/2 black (assuming her Mother is/was not mixed as well), but she is very fair skinned - actually ligther complexion than mine and I'm 1/2 Italian 1/2 Scandinavian. Many fans (me included) back then thought or assumed she was white. Jill stated in one of the Biographies that she had to explain her heritage to Prince, so I would imagine he also may not have initially been aware that she was part black. Prince transformed Jill's look into the "Marilyn Monroe" image (short platinum blonde hair) when she began appearing on stage and in the videos. She has the same look in Purple Rain. Many fans have stated they did not know she was of mixed race back then. I have no doubt that Prince expected that would be the case as well.

Jill, in terms of complexion and features, appeared to be more white than black - especially back then. That's all I was trying to say on my post above - didn't mean to offend. I think the side that she personally identifies with is a different thing, and completely great either way. |
