Mr. Hayes, Prince and "Don't Say You Love Me" Interestingly, in his YT innerview with Militant, Morris Hayes confesses that he played everything on DSYLM, was paid for the gig but went uncredited. Apparently, Levi gave him a demo recorded by Prince, Morris then recorded the basic tracks that we are familiar with, over which Prince must have rerecorded his vocals (since we have the demo) before sending the track to Martika for completion. . The sound quality of the interview isn't great (IDK where Morris was but there are children screaming and all sorts of background noise) so someone correct me if I misunderstood some details, not being a native English speaker. I hope Princevault will soon update their entry for the song with this info. . I always felt DSYLM didn't sound like a typical Prince track, so this doesn't surprise me much, but it's a great bit of information! What I'm very curious about is what was Prince's original demo like. Unfortunately Morris didn't say anything about it and Militant didn't ask, but one can assume it must have been quite barebone if P wanted someone to rerecord it from scratch. David Frank from The System, who is a friend of mine, also worked on the song. |

You're doing a great job with those interviews, many interesting facts have already come up thx to them, thx for this great work I listen to them in audio on my smartphone so I didn't know about the subtitles, but that's really cool to have done that, too . The circulating Prince demo is definitely the same basic tracks than the final version, the latter having those overdubs by David Frank, Rahasan Patterson and Paul Pesco besides Martika's vocals (it's cool, BTW, that Martika managed to bridge the gap between Prince and these three very talented artists). So my understanding is that: 1/ Prince records a quick demo (Version 1.1 - uncirculating) , hands it to Levi who hands it to Morris. 2/ Morris rerecords the whole song from scratch, most likely without vocals (Version 2.1 - uncirculating) 3/ Prince adds vocals to Morris' recording and sends it to Martika (Version 2.2 - circulating) 4/ Martika and her posse finalize it and that's the released version (Version 3.3 - released) Did you come up with the same conclusion? . Also, I think at some point Morris talks about him doing one (or a few?) unreleased remix(es) of either Chocolate or Jerk Out? I should check it out with the subs now that I know they're there but probably you remember it? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

The remix Morris worked on for The Time didn't come out - it wasn't either of those songs as I recall, it was actually "Shake!".

Have you watched Militant's recently uploaded interview with Sonny and Tony? . There's some new info (to my knowledge anyway) from Tony. He says his spoken part at the end of Jughead was a piece he'd wrote called Money Minder (or could be Money Man, can't quite make it out). . He laughs about Fargnoli's lawsuit after he thought P wrote it about him but he (Tony) had wrote it and was never asked about it. . PVault does state Jughead includes a rap from Money Matters by Tony and Kirks old group (MPLS) but I'm not sure if that is referring to Tony's spoken part at the end
