Anyhoo - I loooooved the show Fame back in the day. We talked about it every week at school. They didn't typically use cover songs in the earlier seasons. The first two seasons, the only ones out on DVD, used original songs. It was later that they started to use covers of pop and rap songs for the show. So I'm not surprised "Controversy" made it in. It's a funky thing to dance to.

And it's not supposed to be funky or unfunky, it's supposed to be the backdrop for dancers. It's not a cover's contest, or even karaoke (as other songs ended up sounding like). They were produced for TV shows, so, of course, they're going to have a different edge than some skinny motherfucker with a high voice camped out in a studio in the midwest jerking off on the console to see what happens.

By the way, that's Michael DeLorenzo in the beige tights to the left. He was in "Beat It" among a million other videos back then. He was later in one of the two lead roles in New York Undercover with Malik Yoba, on Fox. It ran four seasons, but DeLorenzo left after three. RIP Gene Anthony Ray. He was amazing on and off the show.
