If the YouTube comments are a gauge, you and the poster above are in the minority. One person said it was "like watching a first date." And when he careened around peeking at and commenting on her big "bum," telling her that "brothers love" that, I almost fell out of my chair. She was blushing profusely.

I thought the video was sexy and cute but he was a married man....
Yes, but not for much longer. I believe he announced the "annullment" of the marriage not long after this interview. Seems he had places to go, and other people to see... |

You mean the same "virtual stranger" whose security detail that she stormed past to meet? IMHO, she seemed to be flirting (right along with him) the entire time, especially with her "Romeo, Romeo" antics on the swing set. I sat amazed almost to the point of paralysis the first time I watched it. At first, I only saw the first part and I could not rest until I tracked down the rest of it.
[Edited 1/5/19 17:03pm]
Like another poster above, I found this interview cringeworthy. We’ve all known that person who has to be validated by every person in the room of the opposite sex and that is what Prince came off as to me. He had never seemed that way before so I was just stunned. Not only that he seemed self-conscious and uncomfortable and I felt second hand embarrassment for him. The way he ran in the gravel with his high heels, and she has a big ole butt and he’s tiny and I can’t even imagine them having sex lol. This was not sexy to me.

[Edited 1/5/19 17:47pm] So many first dates are awkward and uncomfortable so you could easily be making my point. Some are not though so I see your point. I have forgotten the point of this entire conversation though. |

Prince was doing his best to throw her off her game, no doubt. This was always his "schtick". He did it all the time with journalists/reporters too. I didn't look at the talk on the playground as excessively flirty - I looked at it as just banter back and forth. The Romeo/Rapunzel bit came out because she was standing way up on the platform looking down at him.

I will say he looked seriously tiny there. You really got a glimpse of how small he actually was. Mel B looked gigantic next to him. He looked "elfin". Still cute, but incredibly small.
Yes,it struck me not so much that he was shorter than her but just how small his frame was. I think that was one reason he came across so boyish to me in this interview. |

Having been involved with a cheater once upon a time I am on to some of their games, like “if I openly flirt with this person maybe they won’t notice when I actually bed THAT person”. In this case that person would have been Mani. |

I think Mayte was on to the Mani situation fairly early on. I thought she stated she knew he had a thing for her because he would often stare at her. Also, I recall her stating that she knew something was going on between them when Prince arrived in Spain with Larry G and crew and Mani was with them, and wearing one of his symbol necklaces. Ouch! And if she had heard the song Madrid 2 Chicago when it was first recorded in '98 she would have had no doubts about it |

As much as I loved the man, in all honesty, he really wasn't a good person, when it came to how he treated women. Like many I'm sure, I used to fantasize about one day meeting Prince, falling in love with him, having a relationship with him, marrying him, whatever......so foolish we are when it comes to celebrities!!!! Truth is, Prince wasn't the man our fantasies made us think he was. He was a flawed human being just like we all are, and didn't treat women well at all! Most, he used, abused, and hurt deeply, and then just coldly walked away and didn't look back! Sure, he was charasmatic, and he definitely knew how to use his sex appeal to get the women he wanted, but after he got them, the thrill wore off quickly, and it was on to the next one for him. Now, I'm no longer the young, naive, young woman that many of us were when we feel in love with Prince, and like they say, with age comes wisdom, and the blindfold has fallen off, and I can see the man for what he truly was, a womanizer, and I say, thank God, that my foolish dreams never came true, because if they had, I would have just been one of those in long line of others, that Prince used, abused, and left broken hearted. |

But she stated she told him to knock it off. Another big enigma around Prince, the one woman who he lost control over (if you see this interview that way) rejected him. But he also had a wife and girlfriend so why lose control over anyone, especially a woman twice his size? |

Deny deny deny is the rule of that game. Mayte either fell for his lies or didn’t want a pampered life to end, who knows? These women are not going to be honest about their motives. Who could be when so much money and fame and prestige is involved? Could there be big secrets they have to hide? I happen to think so. |

Mayte had it the worst of any of the women, because she truly grew up under the PP umbrella. She had no college education, no other skills save for some bellydancing, but let's face it - that's not enough. I'm guessing Prince was the one who initially got her set up in NYC, but who knows? I didn't read her book, not sure if she covered that piece. If anything, she was most likely scared to have to go it on her own, especially after living that lifestyle. Pretty rough. |

I think some of the women do still suffer mentally from the relationship they had with him.

^^@violetcrush, I've heard that it was Mayte's parents that pushed for her to get into a relationship with Prince. She was very young, and they allowed her to live with him while under age.....God, what kind of parents would do that to their child? I felt sorry for Mayte, because she was very naive during that time, and so easily manipulated by Prince. I remember on that show that she was on called Hollywood Exes or something like that, and they said something about Prince, and her mom spat on the floor, saying that Prince was a good entertainer, but not a good person, or something like that. However, I remember watching the Oprah interview with Prince and Mayte, after their child died (and it was the strangest thing finding that fact out afterwards)....and seeing Prince blatantly lying about it, pretending like the child was still alive, while Mayte just sat there, trying hard not to cry, and having to play along with it. You can just see how much Prince controlled her just by the looks he was giving her, it was just awful! Then I read her book, and found out even more, and it just opened my eyes to the man that Prince really was, and I didn't like what I saw. We put these celebs on a pedestal, and make gods out of them, but we don't really know them at all! They are humans just like we are, with human flaws, and are not perfect! We shouldn't worship them, or make them into something that they're not, just because they are a celebrity, with money, talent, and fame.

He had obviously been crying and holding himself together, not only for his wife, but for his business. He HAD to be strong, he saw no other way to behave. If he said baby is dead, guess what happens? He can’t go on to sing or promote or be a strong man. |

Oh, I agree 100%. I think the biggest culprit in Mayte's story is her Mother. I have an 11 yr old daughter, and I don't care how talented I think she is, I would NEVER send her into a situation like that at 17 yrs old - 1,000's of miles away from me. Never. Ever. So, clearly the Mama had $$ in her eyes - fame and money was her priority, and sadly at her daughter's expense. Awful, just awful. I think you can take any control Prince had over other women (Susan, Vanity, Susannah) and multiply that by 1000 with Mayte. I don't think he was in love with her either. I will cut him a little slack about the Oprah show, because that taping had been scheduled well before the baby's birth, and it is understandable that Prince did not want to have that discussion so soon after the baby's death. What a horrific time for all of them. He had a major release to promote with all of these scheduled appearances and his baby had just died at birth. Just tragic. That whole show was cringe-worthy.
*
Wendy Melvoin said once in an interview when she was asked about getting into conversations about Prince with the fans and answering their questions about him - she said something like, "I get carried away sometimes, and I have to be careful, because many of his fans hold him up on such a pedastal, and they don't want to hear anything that will change that for them"... |

Would recommend Mayte's book to all.
P wasn't always honest, and it's also obvious that everything stated in every book out there can't be truthful.
However, as I said in another thread about Devin's book, to get different perspectives is good. At least I think it is.
Any way we slice it, Mayte was very significant in P's life, and she went through a LOT.
Regarding the situation with Mani, I think it's worth noting at least one thing from her book. Like violet said, she describes being onto it early in the game. She also says that there was a good deal of infidelity in her parents' enduring marriage. So...what was perhaps normalized and expected was, as it is for many of us, shaped in part by the navigation of struggles by the families we come from in the first place.

Be that as it may, thanks to that interview (orchestrated by Prince), she became a permanent part of his story.

That's true. I think he had changed a lot in the past few years of his life in many respects. After watching the interview again,I didn't think that he was out of line with Mel B. He was clearly flirting but I don't think it was in an overbearing or obnoxious way. I thought he was seeing Mani by that time but I noticed when they were playing the word association game he replied "Mayte" when she said "Food." so he was obviously wanting to give the impression that they were still married and things were good. |
