Yes she does. Again, just because you didn't see them, doesn't mean they don't exist.
Maybe she's a photoshop expert....amazing what can be done these days He wasn’t an idiot, no way would he let himself be photographed with a groupie, IF he was ever in her company, which I doubt. Exactly. |

That sounds like Mel B.
as soon as I heard Mad Sex I thought those lines were about her.
Tatoos, tongue piecing, animal print clothes, bushy head - bit of a coincidence if not.
She's from Leeds not London but I guess London sounds better. No disrespect to Leeds

I suppose it's possible that she has actual photos, but he WAS averse to taking pictures with random folks, even spurning requests from high-profile celebrities. [Edited 1/5/19 7:52am] |

Even with all of his serious relationships - Susan M, Vanity, Susannah, Mayte, Manuela...there seem to be no candid or personal photos. I think he stopped that very early on in his career. And back in the 90's there were clunky cameras, not Smart Phones which now make it very easy to secretly snap pictures. |

This is true, which is why I edited my comment to add that "he WAS averse to taking pictures with random folks..." But, I don't want to be presumptious by characterizing the nature of the relationship that she claims to have had with Prince. Were they supposed to be close or was she an admitted "groupie," as described in Reply #88? [Edited 1/5/19 8:32am] |

So true about the smart phones, because I've seen sites where they post horrible photos of people in places like Walmart, whom I'm sure have no clue that they are being photographed to be made fun of.....such a disgusting, despicable thing to do to anyone! Somewhere some of the people in our society took a turn for the worst, and it's really scary what we've become. |

Really? From what I have read of her posts, those "insights" are mainly just general snippets of his "persona" and/or behaviors which most long-term Prince fans have already come to understand and/or learned from listening to his music, reading his interviews, reading the Biographies that include specific information given by those who lived and/or worked with him for many years, and also just following the events of his life and career.
*
If you look at her comments vs the detail and insights that Susannah Melvoin has recently presented to the public - there is absolutely no comparison. The information that Susannah gave allowed me to learn more about the man in specific detail that I had not already known. I have learned absolutely nothing new about him from any of CatB's posts.
*
Quite frankly, I call BS on a lot of those posts - such as the "Mad Sex song was written about Mel B". Really?? You have someone like Susannah, for whom so many songs were written, and yet he never actually stated that directly to her. Yet, we are supposed to believe that CatB was privy to the inspiration for one of his songs?? Yeah, okay. Gotcha. Come On!! With the exception of that online fan Q&A in 1997, where he stated Forever In My Life was written for Susannah, and gave cryptic answers about one or two other songs, he has NEVER discussed the subject of his songs when written about a specific person. Right, but that "nuance" is nothing more than her spinning the words to imply the old "I was there and so I know...wink wink" bit. I think her mistake is that she has claimed to "know" certain things that many understand would not likely have been shared with her.
Honestly, I might have taken the bait had she claimed to be one of the side chicks in the 80's, because he was much less guarded then - still private, but not nearly as guarded as he was during the mid to late 90's and on. |

Let's say that you are correct: Prince never told Cat B that "Mad Sex" was about Mel B. That still doesn't mean that the song is not about Melanie. And, let's face it, those lyrics are very descriptive and they fit her much too closely to be mere coincidence.
We don't need Cat B to tell us that. It is what it is. As you wrote in your comments above, she is simply stating what "most long-term Prince fans have already come to understand and/or learned from listening to his music, reading his interviews, reading the Biographies that include specific information given by those who lived and/or worked with him for many years, and also just following the events of his life and career."
And, I have to ask, why are you so viscerally opposed to the idea that Prince wrote this song about the UK beauty, with whom he was known to consort (and with whom we saw him flirt outrageously during a now legendary recorded interview at Paisley)???? [Edited 1/5/19 10:47am] |

I know CatB had a very deep connection with Prince which included knowing him.

I'm not exactly sure which posts you've had to clarify for me, but I would say that there would be nothing unusual about that on a site such as this one. Lots of words/phrases being passed back and forth, so misunderstandings can happen.

Nope, sorry. We are all anonymous strangers on this site, so I think it's completely understandable why I would not take anyone's claim to have known Prince personally as fact without some type of tangible proof. I know from the several org notes I've received that I am far from the only one who feels this way. |

I would like to say this...part of what made Prince so fascinating (at least to me) was his sublety and emotional depth. He spoke a less literal language (which we are all still attempting to interpret) and I am asking that you consider that your literal interpretation of the 'facts' is sometimes a bit tone-deaf.

My issue with the Mad Sex song was the posting on here that "the song is about Mel B because CatB said it is about her". Uh, okay.
*
Could Mad Sex have been inspired by Mel B? Possibly, but again, based on the time it was recorded (he had just briefly met her a few months earlier), and the way the lyric is written, it is very possible the subject was someone else that he had been involved with on a more serious basis. The lyric connotates a past relationship with someone he continues to run into when he's out. Regarding the physical desription - Mel B was far from the only chick wearing leopard prints or who had a tongue piercing back then. It was a trend, which is why she wore it too. The lyric, "bushy head mulatto breakdown, and your lips got wet today" - what head and lips do you think he's referring to here?? The song is about "mad sex", so he's clearly referring to the "other" head and lips of the woman - and not the ones above her shoulders. Same word play as "Sugar Walls" and "Little Red Corvette".
*
Prince used word-play constantly in his songs, especially those that described sex. Many people take the lyrics literally when he's often using the terms to mean something else entirely. |

Right....and I just explained that in my post above with regard to the song "Mad Sex" and taking the song literally vs. understanding the subtle word play that he used within the lyric.
*
Prince's subtlety and emotional depth has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not an anonymous person's claim of having a personal relationship with him is fact or fiction. In reality, it is because of his mystique and lack of transparency that these claims can be easily made by just about anyone. |

My point was, those lyrics could point to any woman from London that he had dated, and it's very conceivable that Prince consorted with several women who had a tongue piercing. Again, that and belly button piercings were the trend during that time - so were leopard prints.
*
Mel B interviewed Prince more than 6 months AFTER he recorded Mad Sex. And see below...she was not wearing leopard print boots.

Thanks for the screen shot visual, as my memory clearly did not serve me well. I just remember it being a very bold print. As to P's "Mad Sex" muse, I'll just leave that alone. To each his own on the matter.

My point was, those lyrics could point to any woman from London that he had dated, and it's very conceivable that Prince consorted with several women who had a tongue piercing. Again, that and belly button piercings were the trend during that time - so were leopard prints.

Mel B interviewed Prince more than 6 months AFTER he recorded Mad Sex. And see below...she was not wearing leopard print boots.

You're welcome. And that was the genius of Prince - honest but cryptic enough with the lyrics in order to keep his audience guessing |

Children please! Move on and take your bitching back and forth to orgnotes.
This thread is getting off track. I may shut this puppy down with the swiftness.
And I've been asked why I don't post in PM&M much... not that P&R is better, but at least it's somewhat timely. This hyperbolic referendum on The OP is sucking the life out of something that could be a fun thread. Prince consorted with...blahblahblah...R U kidding me?
Since Prince is no longer with us, there is only so much "timely" information to read and post about him. Even new developments, like Melanie's book in which she reflects on Prince, are rooted in the past...and subject to interpretation. [Edited 1/5/19 12:06pm] |
