Newsweek has picked Prince's "PIANO & A MICROPHONE 1983" as one of the best albums of 2018:

Love this line though

"It’s also unassailable proof that Prince’s tossed-off rehearsal tapes could be better than the most polished work of many top artists."

Preach.

Interesting that this is your only response. And how does Newsweek and this critic picking the Prince CD make them more moeny than picking another CD?

it will be interesting to see what the critics have to say about the first post 1996 album
to be released from the vault.

i wonder if they will fall over themselves to heap praise upon it or if they will simply
ignore it completely, like they have done with so many of his post warner releases,
except for a few.

Maybe it was an unintentional reply here that was meant for a different thread?
Can’t understand the context for this topic at all.

It is interesting to speculate on what kind of reception this record would have recieved if Prince was still with us. Listening to this album in 2018 , as compared to listening to the tape in the late 80s early 90s is a different experience for me as a consequence of his untimely death. In many ways it is a worthy release in its own right, but I doubt that Prince would have ever consented to it coming out.Anyway, it is nice to see him get some more of the positive critical reception he deserved.

If it sucks like most of his post 1996 do, then they will praise them a little because he's dead. If they suck (which seems likely), then they'll still praise them as Prince is dead and respected.

I don't think Newsweek is complimenting the record so much as complaining about current releases and the sad state of music.

How old are the writers of this article? Maybe they can start a revolution and get others in the press to unanimously admit that (mainstream) music these days is absolute garbage.

I'm saying it would have barely registered and they wouldn't have even reviewed it, not that it suked, but that posthumously coming around on Prince was mandatory after his death. It happens with every big artist who passes.

SEE: Blackstar - David Bowie

Or, name the last Prince album Newsweek reviewed before he died.

as a bowie fan i find piano mic 83 far more compelling than blackstar .. like all of you .. upon his death i relistened to every bootleg outtake that exists one more time and i recall coming across the piano session and thinking ... this sound interesting but also like shit ... i decided i would compile my best sounding boots but delete the others that are unlistenable and just enjoy whatever ride the estate takes us on and hope we get some of these cool but shitty quality in better quality ... and lo and behold it was done ... hope we get some other cool upgrades like large room go lisa purple music g spot ... my only complaint is bring it on a little faster and don't botch the album art next time .. also for what it was pr deluxe was fine ... better than nc2u where they had actual access to the master tapes .. bring on the upgrade boots !

I recall Blackstar getting great reviews during the brief period between when it was released and before Bowie died. After he died is when the public went gaga over it. Bowie's previous studio album, The Next Day also got great reviews from critics. While I agree Piano And A Microphone 1983 would not have gotten much attention if Prince released it himself while still alive, I don't think it's the same with David Bowie near the end of his career.

I'm more impressed by the packaging. I think they did a great job with it.

I think with today's technology, they could have cleaned up that audio at least to remove the tape hiss.

I don't regret buying it though. It's a nice little break now and then.

LOL Newsweek just lost any credibility they might have had with that statement..

Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!
