Haha the tongue click. I thought the same thing when I rewatched that performance. Great question. Think he does it during The Ride, Get Off and a few others that slip my mind. Could it be the sound of penetration ?😜

first single releases and title tracks always set us up for an expectation for an album

The day I bought that cassette, a buddy of mine and I went to a summer league basketball game. We met in town and left his car at a local restaurant. I drove to the game and we listened to the "Batman" cassette there and back. When we returned, we came upon a guy breaking into my friend's car.

I said set us up for an expectation for the album
And I don't mean just a Prince album. I mean in general. An album is usually titled something because it encompasses the vision for the album then there may be cornerstone songs etc

Not ashamed to say I liked "Arms of Orion".
My impression at the time was that The Future sounded pretty cool but I didnt love the tinny, high compression sound which either was intentional or a result of moving from analog to digital recording or simply poorly mastered CDs. It started with Lovesexy but is really apparent here in Batman. I recall Levi having a hand in that sound.
Recall we knew BatDance already and I LOVED Electric Chair from the SNL performance (kind of a late 70s low key vibe on that one). Thought BatDance was Prince's version of sampling, so the Future continued that vibe with samplinig and more compressed digital sound. The album is pretty consistent from taht POV.

My impression of the Batman album after hearing The Future & already hearing Batdance & 200 Balloons was oh hell no (lol) The Future & 200 Ballons had to grow on me but everthing else was the shit to me. I just finished listening to Arms Of Orion & I'm sorry but Sheena Easton nails it! She sang it as so beautifully & gracefully, I felt as if I was among the stars. I was very big on comic books & for Prince to make a Batman album was great for me, 2 of my favorite mediums coming together

The hype around the movie was a tad too much for me and it took me years to really appreciate the Batman album. I think in hindsight my dislike had very little to do with the actual album and more to do with the movie and the surrounding hype. I´m a huge Batman fan but those days were kind of a big blur for me. That inescapable Batman logo everywhere, the rise of Techno and Acid music, the omnipresent smileyface logo, and Prince´s style back then kind of turned me off big time but a couple of years later I learned to appreciate the album and I like most of the songs on it except for Batdance and Vicky Waiting. I was too deep into Hip Hop culture back then and the Batman era just wasn´t my thing. It didn´t really feel like a Prince project to me. And it wasn´t really a Batman project either because Tim Burton never really wanted Prince to write a full album for the movie, he merely wanted to use a couple of songs. But I really liked The Future and the Mark Moore remix, too. I even liked Lemon Crush despite its silly lyrics. The beat felt pretty tight back then. I also liked Scandalous a lot. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
