The Tom Jones "Kiss" is still pretty atrocious. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

I demand you be banned for noise pollution! j/k
You can't imagine the shock and disgust I felt when I heard Jones' version for the first time
and it peaked higher on the charts in the UK than the original?

There are days when, musically, Cyndi Lauper's "When U Were Mine" gets on my nerves. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

I love her cover. I first heard her version and didnt know it was Prince's song then. I think she really made it her own, I've always took the lyrics to be figurative as well.

Didn't Lauper do a live version on some awards show? I remember thinking that was pretty cool

Hmm. That's true. | |

it's been a while since I listened to it and now I want to revisit it. I was obsessed with the album 'She's So Unusual' when I was little so there is a certain amount of nostalgia tied to it for me that may be coloring my opinion a bit. I thought it was great back then though before hearing the original by Prince.

TheFman said: Simple Minds - SOTT Uhm, hm, hm... are u sure? I think that is a great one. Bear in mind it was released in ‘89, and from that point sounds amazing. I would like to add obvious Tom Jones, and i never liked that Muse cover of SOTT.

Just heard them again, and i stand by my opinion. I love (the old) Simple Minds to death, still spinning them regularly. Their own work was much better than this cover. Besides, that cover didn't bring anything much new to it imo, and is a bit boring after the first minute.

I like it. I watched a video of Nina stop her show to make an audience member who was trying to leave sit back down. This fits her. What?

That Cyndi lauper cover bugs me because it sounds like she hadn't quite made it her own yet, its almost there but not quite. Listen to the versions from original demo to her demos to completion of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and you can hear how it takes a few passes for her to make a song her own and WYWM sounds to my ears like its still one away from getting there. Still a decent cover though.

I must confess that I often mishear the lyric as that on the original song! It doesn't really make any sense as "fire" and I think I have been made aware that it is actually "bar", but still my mind hears the former. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

Prince fans can never agree. I personally love Tom Jones's version of Kiss. One of the few well done covers. . Another one is The Square Egg - Joy In Repetition . Of course, I am now commenting on cover versions I do like, instead of bad covers. It's just that there are many bad covers, and very few good ones. Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here!

> Whut? I don't know that the lyrics don't work when sung by a woman. > First of all, Cyndi changed the lyrics: > Original lyric: "Oh girl, when you were mine..." > Cyndi lyric: Oh-oh-oh, when you were mine..." > That's the only liberty she took with the lyrics. However, it alters the story from a guy who has a girl that hooks up with another guy besides him to a girl that has a guy (presumably back in the 80's) who hooks up with some guy. And it only works if you don't think too much about it. > Basically, she made sure that she didn't say that she was hooking up with a girl by changing that one lyric. > Then if you look further, there's the lyric "I know that you're going with another guy" > Well, in order for there to be "another" guy, there has to be an original guy (for lack of a better way to say it). In Prince's version, he's the original guy. Who's the original guy in Cyndi's version? > I apologize for picking that gnat shit out of the pepper, but sometimes I get hung up on grammar related details like that. > [Edited 1/3/19 10:20am]
