Let me be frank. New songs on Crystal Ball better than older boots. Goodbye, Ripoff, She Gave Her Angels, 2Morrow, DaBang, Calhoun Square, Acknowledge Me, pure bombs. Sure, Crystall Ball and Last Heart are better but these newer ones dominate. Dream Factory is excellent but Goodbye creams it.

I happen to think that the DF / CB / SOTT era tracks on the release would still be considered a TOP5 album by most had they been released on a record on their own.
Sure, I love tracks like "Acknowledge Me" and "Days Of Wild" ("Goodbye" is also a guilty pleasure"), but on that 3CD set it's pretty easy to observe how his music got more juvenile in the 90s. | |

Well I think he purposely held off a lot from CB for whatever reason - because it was an experiment, because he wanted to concentrate on more recent material (whilst still trading on the cache of the Crystal Ball name though), didn't want to blow his Vault load too early, whatever. . Something like Make Yo Mama Happy whilst chirpy enough is hardly top drawer material, there's dozens of songs that could've been included over it. I also think the mixed bag approach to the tracklisting doesn't help individual tracks shine. Dream Factory is a fun pop number, but out of its original context sounds completely throwaway. Crystal Ball itself is majestic, but glimmers far less on this set despite being the title track. Most of us knew CB, DF, Last Heart and had had years to get to know those songs, whereas Da Bang, Calhoun Square were not widely circulating previously iirc. . The 93/94 tracks remain great standalone pop songs and should've been on their respective albums for the most part and don't feel spoiled as much by the loud mastering on the set. | |

The funny thing is if we think he s looking at his new unreleased stuff being superior he used AN OLD title to sell it and push it. Also most of the new songs were also kind of older, Goodbye was held off Emancipation What’s my Name and Strays were on COME and should have stayed on it. I think all these songs are really good and time period wise I don’t really care I think you grow and you try new things as you grow, people will dig it and not dig it. I loved the newer songs along with the older boots and I think it's a nice mix of both. | |

I don't really see it as any cheesier than the other ballads he was producing around that time. It's certainly not Arms of Orion levels of cheese (but then, what is?). The only thing dated about it is the cheap ass drum programming. The rest of the song is fine as it is, and miles better than any of the ballads you'll find on Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth and AOA imo. [Edited 12/31/18 3:42am] | |

I agree Frank. I was very happy to get the 93-96 tracks. Especially Acknowledge Me; I couldn't get enough of that on my shitty bootleg cassette and Beautiful Experience VHS. | |

I used to listen to it split up. 80' tracks separated on disc 90's on another and ditched the remixes. However a couple of years ago I started just listening to it as it is and find highly enjoyable. I really love disc 2. | |

I could do without Cloreen Bacon Skin but the rest is mostly great with the odd few good ones in there for good measure. RIP  | |
