I always heard that it went gold at the time which was a dissapointment to WB, Dez said they tried to give Prince his contract back but he wouldn't accept it. Of course, after Purple Rain, his older albums all sold more.

Surprised it hasn't surpassed a million yet in the USA, still RIAA certified only GOLD...

It didn't go GOLD at the time... It was not a big seller at all at the time, it went GOLD due to the Purple Rain craze.

you might be right, i've read those stats 3o some years ago, either way it dissapointed WB who thought they had a normal pop star on their hands. I'm sure it's well past platinum at this point.

No as I stated in my above post, I'm still surprised that it has not been certified platinum by the RIAA.

I'd be interested to see the sales figures for Dirty Mind in the U.S. after all those years it's been released.

It has sold 2 million world wide though.

Last time DIRTY MIND was certified by RIAA was in 1984.

But it goes back to the same issue that the record company are the one's to "push" for receritifcations...

I truely believe many of Prince's albums should be recertified, but never were recertified propely due to many factors, the feud with WB etc...

For example Purple Rain has been certified 13x Platinum by the RIAA in 1996. Surely 23 years later, it has sold more than a million... So Purple Rain should be over the 13 million mark in USA by now...

Michael Jackson's BAD was certified 10x Platinum a few years ago, they also keep up to date with recertifications with the RIAA. It's a shame Prince's albums do not do the same. I bet you Dirty Mind should be Platinum by now in the U.S. As well as The Very Best of Prince should be getting a 3 Million certification very soon...

Just an example, here are the last time they have been RIAA certified. I am not implying that all his albums have sold millions more and should be recerfified, but I am willing to bet a bunch of his most popular and biggest selling albums have passed the sales figures and should be recertified...

DIRTY MIND - GOLD - 1984

1999 - 4 MILLION - 1999

PURPLE RAIN - 13 MILLION - 1996

PARADE - 1 MILLION - 1986

DIAMONDS & PEARLS - 2 MILLION - 19992

THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE - 1 MILLION - 2004

(This was his biggest seller after his death, and hasn't been recertified at all, it should be at least 3 MILLION by now in the U.S.)

Oh sweet, and so very off topic too, says a lot about you. Look, I for one am sick and tired everytime somebody asks something that even remotely resembles a factual question they get this shit ('look it up, don't waste my time,... etc), very troubling phenomenon. People are trying to make conversation. That is a social thing, you know....a social thing, maybe you should look that up.

RODSERLING

Entertainment weekly published a 1.8 millions figure in 1992, So 2.2 millions WW is a realistic figure as of now.
.
In the US, Dirty Mind was certified Gold in June 1984, just before the Purple Craze.
.
Between 1991 and 2006 it sold 125.000 copies Soundscanned.
.
I guess that between 1984 and 1990 it sold that same amount in stores too.
.
Between 2006 and 2016 it sold 60.000 more copies.
.
So up to now, it should have been sold at least 200.000 copies in Music Club alone to claim the million mark. It s not that impossible...
