I guess the "permanant weld" was probably an idea indicating absolute devotion to another; it just would not be that practical in real life.
A slave bracelet represents something that is beyond the physical realm. Of course, good territory for Prince, and somehow might have links to the mideastern costumes Mayte wore when bellydancing??
