In Xanadu did Paisley Park, a stately pleasure dome decree

In Xanadu did Kubla Kahn
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

Princes' own private pleasure dome Paisley Park is holding all of his loot so to speak. His vault of music, fims, one off videos, promos, costumes and some stage set pieces still...collecting and collecting. I think of Citizen Kane's ending where there is a pan shot of all of Kanes' collection and pieces of his life in a vast warehouse. Princes of course is not so big Im sure but still. All the purple artifacts. I know it's his for him to view, hear and go over in his own memories. Hopefully will never be destroyed but preserved

I was raised on the man's stuff and am a huge fan...

Touch of Evil..the opening one take shot etc...Kane...Mercury theater, War Of The Worlds etc.I didn't understand the significance of him doing Perrier commercials in my misspent youth

I think I know what kind of Rosebud Prince likes tho...

Touch of Evil is absolutely fantastic, my favorite noir film... I can only mourn for the loss of so many great movies, The Lady From Shanghai, Heart of Darkness, The Magnificent Ambersons... Films that could have been so much but American consumerism destroyed.

IMO he was never appreciated in his time to the extent of others who dont deserve all the hoopla they receive...I think it was the usual "wasted talent" b.s. as well as the dont recognize what you have till its gone etc syndrome. I have not seen The Lady From Shanghai.

Imagine what Welles could've done if he had lived in a culture that respected art?

"The Trial" is what turned me onto Orson. Only after that did I see "Citizen Kane".

If Paisley Park is Xanadu, what is Prince's "Rosebud"?

Oh this is what Watchtemfall meant..and I agree. The public never appreciated Kane etc. or most of his works upon release

If Paisley Park is Xanadu, what is Prince's "Rosebud"?

Im trying to figure that out. It is something that only he knows of probably..soemtihg insignificant to us but poignant and essential to him from a time before the processed hair and the rock n roll rags etc..if its anything known to us Im thinking its the Hohner Controversy geetar but that's too obvious.

Maybe it's mentioned in one of those very early recordings and we just have figured it out yet. wink

But I like the idea that it was his first guitar, or his first instrument of any kind.

I was thinking its an acoustic geetar from his youth and I immediately thought of For You. A lyric etc or something on For You is probably holding the answer. In that, For You is also his best recording. It's "pure" so to speak. Like when Charles Foster kane was playing in the snow with his Rosebud while his future full of ___ was being determined a few feet away, inside of his house. For you is almost like Orson Welles..it was not repsected when released..and if you ever listen to it, it is a beautiful record. Professionally played etc, some say too perfect void of any real real emotion (hell, P was only a youngiun) but still..itsa brilliant album played mostly nby one man and with one mans vision. Like a Citizen Kane. 6 years before Rain fell. All ya gotta do is listen to I'm Yours the song, to know he could have began and ended here and would have still been great.

Doubt it but I bet some of his loves have metaphorically sat by a ridiculously large fireplace putting together impossible puzzles while Prince did his thang

I love it. smile

Although I wouldn't go nearly as far as you have with those last few sentences. But given the manipulation that every artist must fight through, I can see where it could be a bit of a “Rosebud” experience for Prince.

If so, the last couple of years sound like Prince might finally be getting back to those early days of freedom and fun, years after declaring it so in 1996.

But his greatness after “For You” was ahead of him, even despite all of the obstacles. Listening to that title track with today’s ears is a neat experience, knowing that one of the most storied music catalogues in history is to follow.

And any box set that gets put together had better start with this track, or they are already off on the wrong foot. wink

I love yours too..it is taking me "there" and it makes me think: For You is his Rosebud. Its just got to be. This is the record before there were too many expectations. Before Prince built his empire like rosebud was there before Kane built his empire. With Prince the second album he neded a hit to recoup the loss. This is Rosebud becasue its the first, its before the clothes..its before the turmoil with bandmembers..firing Jedediah after "writing" his scathing review of his wife..as Prince has written songs for others to sing etc..before his failed loves as Kane had...before him building opera houses for his female loves (record deals, videos, cds for those he was inviolved with and then some..like Jill Jones,Mayte, Sheila, Vanity, Carmen ) etc . And the criticims of them and some of their dubious talent just like with Kanes "singer" wife . For You seemingly "insignificant" just like a sled in Citizen Kane. Kane was destined for a powerful career after that home where rosebud was his joy...just like more hall of fame type of music was set for Prince after For You. Damn. I'm trippin. It can begin and end here. It's so perfect for it too.

Yes. Yes. Yes. From this day forward whenever I hear the word "rosebud" I shall think of the innocent young Prince singing alone in the dark of the sound booth, creating something so purely him that he was too shy to have others observing him in action.

And with regards to "building opera houses for his love", don't forget to include Mayte's dance review (I can't remember the name of it right now).

The good news, though, is that Prince at least for the moment seems to have righted himself and so perhaps isn't headed for a slow lonley death inside a gated "Big White Mansion". wink
