What makes Prince so different from other artists?

According to you, what is it that made Prince so different from all the other artists? It may be a combination of characteristics about his personality, his looks or the work he accomplished... What is it that makes you think that the man was so different and ultimately what made him so special to YOU?

For me it is the very fact that this is very hard to pinpoint. His complexity, creativity and resourcefulness. He had a wonderful imagination. With Prince, you just never knew what to expect next and that made (and still makes) it all very thrilling.

His name was Prince and he was funky!

Prince might be the only artist I know that wrote/co wrote every single song he ever recorded (besides covers) He played nearly every instrument under the sun, he changed his name to a symbol to protest against one of the biggest record labels in the world, he was a guitar god, a brilliant Pianist, he made 39 amazing solo albums + records with other people, I also believe he is one of the most bootlegged artist ever.

And all in all, he's the only person to get away with wearing yellow bottomless pants!

Back in the day (late 70's early 80's) the way he dressed (sexy), the songs he sang (sex), the heels he wore (sexy), the makeup he put on (sexy). This was at a time when things like this involving men wasn't cool, but he made it cool. Prince is one of the reasons we now have ratings on records. lol

He was everything our parents didn't like, and couldn't watch on TV and we loved him for it, and once he got time on MTV, our parents couldn't keep us away from the channel, even when MTV was banned in our house. Once the parents left it was turned to MTV, until the parents got home and hit back on the remote and MTV came on, we got into lot's of trouble. So we just learned to flip the channel twice when they pulled in the driveway. biggrin

For me, he sums it up in the video for The Question Of U. Sultry singing, stellar piano playing, weightless transition when walking from his seat to the top of the piano, guitar God moment, sexy guitar pick throw to a female in the audience, dissappears, comes back dancing like a ballerina and as good as anyone. Simply the most complete artist ever.

I think his serious emotional issues drove him to accomplish more than he might have had be been a stable human being.

For me it was his creativity, versatility and sheer talent. I love Stevie Wonder and many other artists as well but Prince's music made me feel like no other. Maybe it was the emotion he put into his music I don't know.

Prince did not want to be seen like other artists. He was a class all by himself.

I don't know many artists - other than Stevie Wonder - who have expressed emotions through their music like Prince did.

Incredible work ethic

Incredibly multifaceted
Willing to be different from everyone else, including forging his own trail

Jack of all trades

A gentleman (especially the older him)

Addressed political and rights issues, including advocacy

Absolutely revered (as a musician) by pretty much everyone that knew of him (except Bart) lol

No hard feelings Bart, just teasing! wink

He was great at all aspects of making music. Usually, when a person tries to be well rounded, he or she has a clear area of weakness or never excels or specializes in anything (stretches himself/herself too thin). When it came to creating music, he could do it all. He had a fantastic voice, he was an excellent lyricist (although uneven as some songs were lyrically better than others), he was an outstanding composer, and a masterful instrumentalist. He played guitar (electric and acoustic) at an otherworldly level, was an outstanding pianist, and could play percussion at a very high level. He could dance his tooshie off. He produced. He was the ultimate jack-of-all-trades. He certainly had weaknesses in other areas of his life, notably his handling of some business affairs and his love life. But as a musician, he did everything well.

I agree with just about everything that was said about him. The thing was, he had so much Godgiven talent bundled with a fearlessness to stretch and do just about whatever he could imagine. You roll all that with a "I don't do this to win approval" attitude, and you get WONDERFUL. worship

+1

his air of mystery, most of his albums are bops straight through; not many artists can claim that. Intriguing style of fashion & his way with the ladies, lol.

Personally: What made him so special is that he's from MN, I'm from MN ❤
In general: "Written, arranged, composed, produced, performed by Prince"
He was music, and music was him.

His versatility was incredible! He could play any musical genres and still manage to add his own style to it. And not just pop or rock but also classical, jazz... (I really admire his ability to play jazz from a very early age - the Loring Park Sessions is a great example) ... even country! cow lol
