peggyon said: I think it was just a funny quip at the end of her story, because he did refer to women as "Momma" in his songs on occasion - at least in earlier years. NC2U - "all the flowers that you planted Momma, in the backyard, all died when you went away..." Later on, he changed the lyric to "baby" when he would play the song at shows.

But, does she feel she is the protagonist?

did U even read it? it is mostly about finger cymbals, David Coleman and Prince. We are not even fully aware she is talking about Make Your Momma Happy until the end because she is mostly talking about finger cymbals. And a recording session. The protagonist is the finger cymbal.

I'm probably not allowed to point this out, but... Finger Cymbals were listed among the instruments Prince played on his debut album For You. Right? So it couldn't have been something he was introduced to by the Colemans/Melvoins.

Where in Susannah's post does she write that Prince had never seen or heard of Finger Cymbals prior to meeting her?? I agree with OF4S....you really need to read the piece again.

*

She began the story by describing the Cymbals, and her family history with the Coleman family playing music in their family homes, as well as, David Coleman learning about and playing the middle eastern insruments. Then she explained how Prince first heard Jonathan and David's song ATWIAD.

*

Susannah's words about Prince and the Finger Cymbals:

*

"One of those songs they would record was, “Around the World in a Day”. It was recorded at Sunswept studios in Hollywood in 1984. During the rehearsal for Purple Rain, Jonathan and David sent a cassette to Wendy and Lisa to see what they thought. During this rehearsal, they stopped to play it for Prince in Lisa’s car. After listening, Prince would only say, “Can I have it?”
This would be the moment that changed the trajectory of his music.
While recording Prince’s version of “Around the World in a Day” Jonathan and David did play the finger Cymbals, while David played his Darbuka and Oud, creating the definitively explosive new sound for Prince. Wendy, Lisa and I sang the backing vocals. I don’t know when exactly, but, at some point when leaving the studio that night, David offered Prince his Finger Cymbals as a gift. Those Finger Cymbals stayed with Prince for as long as I new him."

*

How do her words translate into "Prince being "introduced" to the Finger Cymbals by the Coleman/Melvoin family?? Because David gave his personally owned Cymbals to Prince?? You are clearly putting your own spin on Susannah's words in order to, yet again, satisfy your very bizarre obession with knocking down their relationship/collaboration with Prince.

*

Finger Cymbals on his first album??? I don't recall hearing them playing on any of those songs. In fact, the first time I heard them prominently featured in any of his songs was on the ATWIAD album. The first time I saw Prince actually using the Cymbals was on the Parade tour.

*

Here you go - from the article "Listening To Unofficial Prince with Hamish:

"The songs keep on coming, next we have Mountains. Again it’s lively, with Prince doing plenty of dancing. Early in his career he wasn’t much of a dancer, but by this stage he has got it done, and he is excellent in this song, and indeed in every song. The horns sound nice and sharp in this one, and there is a brief moment for Wendy and Miko to play. Wendy is up front and prominent for most of the gig, while Miko is fairly anonymous at the back in the shadows. It’s a shame, because his funk playing is excellent. There is a nice long fade out, and I can hear his playing a little better. Prince ends the song with finger cymbals, I can’t help but smile when I see him play them."

I couldn't agree more, Hamish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking about this time period, and wondering how or if things would have been different had Paul Peterson stayed with The Family. The Parade shows may have been very different. Prince absorbed Susannah, Eric, Jerome, Miko, and the backup dancers into The Revolution. I'm guessing The Family would have been working on the second album while The Revolution toured for Parade. Or, they would have opened for The Revolution, and then Eric could have played both shows.

*

I guess with the tension brewing in the band and Mark quitting the disbanding of The Revolution would have been inevitable, regardless of whether or not The Family had stayed together.

It is great. Love their show at 1st Avenue. Wish they would have been able to keep it together for at least one more album.

I'll have to try that tea! I usually use a natural Habiscus tea with honey and some spices, so I'm sure I'll like it. Love that she made him vanilla cake with chocolate icing all the time too. The little details of his everyday life are so great to hear smile

Not sure about lyrical chunkiness, but when I first heard the song I liked it, but thought it was a bit "choppy" sounding. However, the more I listen to it the more the music starts to come together. It's definitely has a unique rhythym to it. In the CB liner notes Prince states, "we were trying to prove to Susannah the MPLS sound" or something like that. So, maybe this is Prince's effort to bring out that exact mix of sounds - funky with those jazz undertones.

I like it lyrically and what he was saying in it. It was one of my favorites right away when I first heard CB and I put it on a mix that I made of the other songs from that time. I also like the meshing of funk and jazz.

Yes, the music was wonderful, same with the message, just the delivery of the lyrics feel a bit chunky to me. But the chorus flows perfect. A Pop Life Bside like.

Cake...yum. My gramma made vanilla cake with chocolate icing. Constant Comment tea vapor makes the room smell nice too.

Hibiscus flowers lower your body temperature. Good for summer but not winter. It's in a lot of blends because of the pretty red color but it cools you down.

My favorite cake combo was always vanilla/yellow cake w/ chocolate frosting smile

I run "hot" body temp-wise, so the Hibiscus works well for me. It's good for lowering blood pressure too - mine goes up sometimes. Love my coffee too, so I usually end up drinking tea when I'm sick - especially with chest congestion. My "elixir" is the tea, honey, cayenne pepper and ground ginger. Works like a charm to break up that mucus before it turns into a bad infection smile

*

Def going to try the CC too!

*

In the "behind the scenes" video for the LoveSexy tour there is a shot of him taking a sip of tea while he's sitting in a salon chair and talking with one of his associates.

Susannah is a GREAT storyteller! I remember when I attended Toure's panel discussion on his book he wrote about Prince(r.i.p.). She had us ALL on the edge of our seats listening to her. She's VERY dramatic almost as much as her chatterbox sister Wendy.

Both Susannah and Wendy are smart, funny, eloquent, and talented women. It's easy to see why Prince was drawn to them and wanted them in his life.

Well what song(s) do you hear finger cymbals on? on For You?

Did he 'continue' to use finger cymbals from 1979-1983/84?

.

The thing is David brought in very exotic Middle Eastern instruments and sounds. And a way of playing them. I played finger cymbals in elementary school. I did not play Middle Eastern instruments and manipulate the sound.

Prince played the instrument David gave him on the Parade 1st Avenue open rehearsal show. I don't think he ever played the finger cymbals live again.
