I do. But current, modern technology doesn't make that easy anymore. So it depends where I'm listening - driving I usually have my Ipod on shuffle, at home I will listen to entire CD's and vinyl records moreso. And of course any new album gets listened to in its entirety several times over. I just bought a vintage vinyl record of Dirty Mind at a wrecka stow in San Antonio and I can't wait to get back home to MN and play it!

I must be in the minority because I mostly don't. More often than not I'll skip around. I love When Doves Cry and Purple Rain but there's only so many times I can listen to them.

I find that the albums where I like every song (albums like Purple Rain, 1999, Dirty Mind), there's a few songs where, despite me liking them, I just can't listen to them anymore. I've heard them so much that they do nothing for me anymore. Then there are other albums where I might only like half the songs (Emancipation, For You, Plectrum Electrum), so I obviously skip the songs I don't like. And then you've got the albums where I only like one or two songs (Phase One, Love Symbol, Planet Earth) where I've made myself a playlist called "Good songs on Bad albums" and I put the good ones in there and I don't bother with the shit songs at all.

Yes, same here

sometimes I'll mixed live versions of songs in place of all the album cuts

I never seem to care to mix Prince music with any other artist. Every once in a while I've mixed a Joni Mitchell song or a Jimi Hendrix, Led Z or James Brown song that seemed to flow with an album

ie Down To You(Joni) with Parade

but usually it is just Prince music

And mixing in the protege music from the same era helps to tell a movie/story

*

The bolded part is true for me. But, I have various playlists for Prince related artists, such as artists who influenced Prince, artists who remind me of Prince, and, of course, the list or proteges. But, The Time and Jesse Johnson have their own playlist whereas Shelia E., Wendy and Lisa, The Family, Vanity/Apollonia, and others are combined into a playlist I've titled The Purple Family.

Yeah I mix in the proteges and music he did with them and band members or their music that flows

Depends on which album. I think I can do Expectation, The Chocolate Invasion, The Slaughterhouse + HNR Phase 2 (but I don't like Big City).

Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTTs, Black Album, Lovesexy I tend to put on to listen to the entire album more than the others...Parade gets a special shout out as I am listening to the orginal 86 vinyl as I write this... biggrin

God definitely Parade. I find it his most complete vision. Flows beautifully. Its also so refreshing.

Certain albums I just can't do it though. Dirty mind, Controversy, 1999, PR, Parade, SoTT, Lovesexy...Gold...OK, sure. I give "Do U LIE" a pass because it's so short.

BUt somewhere along the line he just stopped putting out real end-to-end records on this level. There was always a clunker in there - more as he moved on - in ways that were harder to attribute my dislike for simply by virtue of stylistic tastes.

For the longest time it was always 2 or 3 great tracks, 3 or 4 good ones, 2 or 3 bad ones and at least one WTF track.

When I'm in my car and I play a CD, it's always Prince and yes, I listen to it from beginning to end!

I listen in full. Reminds me of the era it was released. If you can relate, his moods changed. Sometimes funky, sometimes sticky. Left me wanting more.

I guess what I meant is that turntables/cd players are a pain due to having to change the record/cd so often. I still buy most of my music via CD's and vinyl. Some i buy from Itunes with my Ipod, but i always leave my ipod in my car. My music files could use some TLC as far as getting it all in one place or another.

Generally not any album after 1989 unless i'm purposely sitting down and trying to understand what on earth he was doing writing Jughead or whatever.

I think that albums are important. They are more than a sum of their parts and tell a story (sometimes intentionally as a concept album) even if just as a snap shot of where the artist was from a creative standpoint.

But now I realise that with the ease of accessing music via your chosen device, I shuffle Prince or seek specific songs rather than just pull out an album that I used to listen to from start to finish. I feel like I’ve lost something and succumbed to the short attention span nature of today’s existence.

I need to reboot and listen to albums I think.

Can you relate?

What are your listening habits and how have they evolved/devolved and why?

*qualifying caveat. When a new album comes out, I’m all about the album start to finish again.

I also share your qualifying caveat. However lately I’ve been listening to entire albums again due to working some at home while just letting the album play on Tidal or the like. In the morning it’ll be something gentle like ONA, the choices increasing in funkiness during the day. It’s a great way to contemplate him more. I do imagine myself giving him advice sometimes on song order.

I often listen to Purple Rain start to finish.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.
