1) Not touring a bit longer for Purple Rain, and a short summer leg in Europe, the summer gigs could've satisfied ATWIAD fans and promoted the album.

2) Not going out dancing the night of the We Are The World session. I understand him trying to be cool and all, but all he had to do was sit in his hotel room for a few hours, but no...

3) Making Under The Cherry Moon, he knew it was shite and so did we. Epic waste of time and resources.

4) Dedicating so much energy and time to Sheila E. I never understood his devotion to her so-called career other than he was banging her, but I guess it proves he loved her in the end.

5) Not touring a bit longer for Parade in the US, his tours were too short in this period. All that hype for 30 some odd dates.

6) The big one. not touring US for SOTT, goes without saying, career killer in my book, he got scared then he got lazy.

7) Posing bare-ass on Lovesexy, career killer dittto, what was he thinking? What normal grown man wants to thumb through his vinyl collection and and have to look at a nude effeminate man on its cover? Not me. Sorry, this is not art, unless it's the art of sabotaging your own album.

8) Graffitti Bridge, enough said.

9) Not touring the US for Diamonds And Pearls.

By this stage, changing his name and going to war with Warner Brothers was hardly his biggest error in my opinion. P fudcked up about a hundred times along the way. At this point, for me, Classic Prince was finished and never to return, wandering in a maze he couldn't exit for over a decade and I truly never regained my love for him or his catalogue. So for me it will always be 80's Prince from 82-88, a good run like most acts get but he dropped the ball so many times when he had it squarely in his hands... I call him butterfingers.

Maybe his female fans do idiot. This album cover never offended me, as a straight man myself am curious why it offends you so much? Homophopbic much? You do know Prince had a feminine side right wore makeup and high heels. Prince must of offended you every time he was on TV or in concert.

Prince had the career he had, who knows how much better he could have done. by the end of the 80's all the icons from that era except maybe madonna, had a hard time with sales. Grunge and hip hop changed a lot of stuff. recently, listening to terence trent d'arby's vibrator i love it so much that i just think it's a goddamned shame that it was overlooked because nothing out at the time was better or if it was, you'd have to show me. excellence doesn't mean much in the business.

Not seeking/accepting help for his addiction sooner which ultimately resulted in the California doctor's emergency intervention arriving about 12 hours too late..... No other miscalculation tops this one.

I wonder if he had many different thoughts. He was withdrawing as the week played out (prior to visit/lab draws w/Dr. S on 4/20). I get the sense he was feeling overwhelmed about trying to kick his habit alone but not feeling safe with assistance from others, feeling sick from withdrawals, exhausted as he alledgedly had not slept for several days as well. Maybe worn down. May have felt trapped.

Why did he feel like his secret getting out would destroy him? It seems like he didn't have much trust in his fans.

Prince always had a wierd thing with secrecy, always. it would have hurt his image certainly, especially with some of the preaching he did, his fans here were assholes so He was correct about that, should it have mattered? fuck no.

I ain't even want to post in this thread cause it just feels like I'm talking smack about him but I read in a magazine that they say when he was getting ready to release "Love Symbol" album that the producers strongly suggested dropping "7" as the main single for the album. Prince demanded that "My Name is Prince" be the single and that doing so was one of his biggest commerical mistakes ever and it severely impacted his career. Seems weird but I work on cars for a living, I don't produce music lol

No I don't but I think NPG played it at the First Ave Mpls show last September and my sister and I were giggling. I do like Daddy Pop despite how early 90s it sounds.

Actually, I believe the first release from that album was Sexy MF. His pronouncing the whole word in the song severely limited airplay on radio, and it charted poorly. MNIP followed, and did a little better, scraping into the Top 40. 7 finally came next, and made the Top Ten. So he had to listen to Warners say "I told you so". Ironically, the first two singles went Top Ten in Britain and elsewhere. But this became an issue with Prince's relationship with his record company, as each accused the other of not fully promoting the record, thereby negatively impacting its total sales.

I still have my original Love Symbol CD and it contains the G-Rated version of Sexy MF. You would think the radio stations also had the G-Rated version to play on air.

My recollection is that the single preceded the album by 3-4 months. Prince had the original R-rated version out there. Later, the cleaned up version was released. By then, the single (with the original version) had stiffed on the charts, and the g-rated version came out on the flip side of some iteration of the following single, My Name is Prince. I believe the album release could have either version, as was common then.

I have no idea, but I don't think this is far off the mark. I think The Artist Formerly Known As Vanity choosing to end medical treatment, and passing away as a result, is a factor as well. Not the reason though, just a factor among many others.

still don't make a lot of sense to me, i think suicide is still a possibility but not sure. today i was looking up an old friend who committed suicide, there was a site full of people who committed suicide, including the the stars from my area, cobain and cornell. I thought of Prince and just really felt sad for all of them people on that site.

Remotely possible I suppose but unlikely IMO. More plausible than a premeditated murder though.

I finally saw those photos from Paisley Park everyone was talking about a while ago and, whoa. They evoke a really strange vibe, like he had just moved in or was just moving out. Not at all what one would expect to see. There's a meandering, unfinished, inattentive, procrastinating feel to most of the place that was unsettling to me.

Sorry...off topic.

If it's true that he told JH that he found life "incredibly boring" it sounds like he had no need for precautions.

That would make sense I suppose.

It just seemed so out of character for a guy who changed clothes 4x a day, famously renovated someone else's 3121 house in L.A., apllied make up and had his hair done constantly and who had grand pianos lifted into his hotel rooms and shit. The only thing missing in those pix were fucking milk crate end tables, bare light bulbs and floor mattresses.

TBH, it had the look of a dwelling where the main occupant was highly medicated, procrastinating and who kept saying "I'll get to it" but maybe I'm projecting based on what we all know now and what I personally know about people who use opiates. I wouldn't expect Prince to rest a dixie cup of tap water on a table without a coaster though, let alone leave clothes lying on the floor and stuff strewn about like that.

It was strange to me.

On topic, would it be safe to say or assert that Paisley Park itself might have been a miscalculation on certain levels? Maybe not the building itself, which makes sense for him, but the actual label and what he did with it. Seems like he might have done more by really finding and promoting unique, visionary talent instead of wasting a lot of its potential on "The Woman I'm Fucking This Month" club. He never really BROKE someone out did he?

Yes,I was kind of surprised to see the condition of his living quarters, particularly his bedroom and bath. He didn't seem to care as much about his clothing and appearance the last few years either. He still looked nice but looked like he was putting more emphasis on comfort rather than style.Tyka said in an interview that he was going through his clothing and other items and telling her how he wanted them to be displayed for the museum so perhaps that was why some clothing was out. The cds strewn on the floor were a bit surprising to see and that probably didn't have anything to do with preparing for the museum. Yes,I think the PP label could have been better used I agree.
