Damn, The Dance Electric...

...with Prince on vocals. I haven't listened to this song in over two years until tonight. To me, it encapsulates everything that thrilled me when I first heard that MPLS sound and still makes me want to get up and dance until that last moment in time... yes Does this song still have the same effect on others as it does me? Including jaded Prince-o-philes... lol

The one thing missing on Prince's version on Purple Rain is the guitar soloing.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I thought this years ago...and, at least tonight, I think it again--this may well be my favorite Prince song (the one with him on vocals) because I think it captures the essence, urgency, and the conflictions/contradictions in his life and beliefs laid bare in the searing sound of his music at the core of this song... Of course, he had other songs that explored this same topic but I think this is one that more...explicity states it... Anyway, just my two cents after hearing this again after not for a while...

Still don't have the PR deluxe--listening to my bootleg version...

and that's a shame sad because i think it's a great song and i love prince singing it,
but the version on the pr deluxe does drag on way too long without the guitar parts
to liven the whole thing up and lift it to another level.

1000% agree with both of you. What a huge disappointment that was. Can’t believe the estate so royally screwed up what should have been an easy decision.

They most likely didn't make a decision, they didn't even realize what they were doing. Most likely they used the one version they found in the WB vault and never realized it was an early mix. That's what you get when you don't ask hardcore fans to advise you (even though Matthieu Bitton was asked, but IDK how hardcore a fan he is).

He's the only person they asked?? The rich kid fan? Explains a lot tbh. Surely they asked Questlove? He at least geeks out about obscure outtakes

One can be rich and knowledgeable, I just don't know how hardcore a fan he is. You have those fans who will have more or less every album, some boots and some singles, and those people like some of us here who track down every single thing.

IDK what happened, I was once told that there are other fans in the industry who offered to help, and that they were kindly thanked but no thanked.

But they probably asked other people. I believe other people have been asked. Susan said she was involved but IDK to which extent.

I'm not aware of Questlove being involved, though. I'd assume it would have been publicized.

Maybe they knew TDE wasn't the final cut, maybe they chose to release it as such because that's all they had at WB and they felt it was too essential a track. IDK. But with Possessed 84 being labeled as Possessed 83, my bet is they were completely clueless and didn't care.

It feels like it goes on because the guitar solo kept it interesting. It's in other bootleg versions; that razor-y slicing guitar noodling. It feels like they left it out either out of ignorance that it existed, or because they wanted it to come across more funk-oriented than a rock hybrid (which seems odd, since Purple Rain is exactly that).

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

maybe they wanted to put stuff on there, that a lot of booters didn't have?

Considering all the sources were subpar quality the prd version is a nice treat ... they did well giving us unheard versions ... i fixed the atrocious eq and edited it down to a shorter length and quite enjoy both versions .. thelive verson from parade tour is quite nice too ... great tune!!!

Someone told me that the WB only had this early verison of the track so teh guitar part wasn't recorded yet and Wendy and Lisa didn't finalize it with there vocals and input amd that this version was all there was on the master tape WB has.
The master tape of the complete track as we know it from bootlegs is hopefully in the estate vault. I also heard once that Columbia/Sony lost the original master of the track, but I don't know if they meant the original complete Prince version or the AC version.

You should have heard the time he did a mash-up of The Dance Electric and Mountains at the House of Blues in Chicago.

I heard they don't. When Prince had completed the track he gave it to AC over at Columbia/Sony.

I like when they did it on the Parade tour. And the time Andre Cymone joined in on it

Love this song. I will say though I honestly can't hear any difference between Prince's and Andre's version.

Unless that's Prince's vocals on both versions...

The lyrics are soul shaking

Good morning children
Take a look out your window
Our world is falling
It's almost time to go
(Dance)
Dance the Dance Electric
The rhythm is love and love is blind
Love your enemies
There isn't much time, there isn't much time

Look - you're livin' in Babylon
Makin', but not feelin' love at all
When your youth is gone, when it comes to dawn
A light of truth will shine and you will fall
