Where was Stare?

I was just bebopping over the hills of the Ozarks yesterday listening to Spotify and couldn't believe there was a Prince song I know I have never heard. It was on one of Spot's complilations of P's music that I just let play, seeing what was on there!!

Not my favorite song, it is a little short in length, but some good stuff in there. I guess I am an idiot, 'cause I had NEVER heard it B4. Anyone else miss this one?

It's on Prince's HitnRun Phase 2 album.

OK, that explains it. Have never listened to that one in it's entirety, just portions. I had just gotten to the point that I thought I had heard everything.

I think this may have been the ONLY Prince song on Spotify for quite a while.

It was--after he pulled everything off Spotify back in 2015, he then a few weeks later gave them Stare exclusively on Spotify. But then later (when nothing else happened on Spotify) it wound up on Tidal, too... and then eventually as part of HitnRun Phase Two. So I guess Stare was pretty much all that was on Spotify until stuff starting going back from Warner last year and then most of the rest of the catalog this year. At least, I think that's how it happened--there may have been a few other things available--I don't actually use Spotify myself.

Great song. I love the bass and horns and how they fade out and come back in at the end. I first heard it on Phase II.

I discover Prince music by listening to an album. The whole album. Maybe we really are in a singles driven market.i don’t know; I’m old school.

Assumedly the OP isn't aware of Princevault, and many new or casual fans probably aren't. There shoukd be a link for it on the front page.

Hey Bartie- I enjoy engaging others in conversation on here. If I wanted to just hang out by myself and dredge through the vault listening to everything that is there, I would. The post was more of an "aha" something I had not heard, not a "where should I have found this?"

It's a social thing with like-minded people...ya dig?

Man, to have not heard an instantly accessible on streaming services Prince song... You've got a big long road ahead of you. I'm a tad jealous.

I think sometimes it's hard to coexist on this board: decades old obsessional fans like me and Bart who know every damn obscure promo edit and have listened to virtually everything ever done by Prince sometimes have a hard time remembering that there are also newer fans, who are where we were decades ago, still in the amazement of diving into the catalogue and making astonishing discoveries every day. But yeah, Jaawwnn is right, we old timers sometimes wish we could go down that road all over again, and I can't imagine how crazy it must be today, with 25 years more of catalogue than when I began, and the internet giving easy access to everything!

Yeah, I know I have some time gaps in my repitoire. There was a point when I set my favorite things aside to raise a family. (Teenagers will wear you down!) Now that I am older, I have time to delve back into things I enjoy, and music is one. I am catching up as quick as I can folks!!

Don't feel bad, I was too busy to keep up with artists I cared about for the same reasons for 15 years or so... Then came a day I turned on a local radio station and I heard a new song and said, "Is that Prince? What has he been up to all these years?" razz lol Then I dived back into the world of Prince (and other artists) whose works I hadn't followed in so many years. And how great it was to discover music that wasn't "new" but was new to me! It's almost like hearing them again for the first time when young... Enjoy the experience! wink

It's cool, we all go thru different paths. So in your case it seems to be even different: old fan like us who took a break and catches up after all those years. Mmmh... Must be a ride as well biggrin

But what you explain is one of the many reasons why I chose not to raise a family lol

We all make our choices about life and take different paths; it's all good! My brother chose not to have any kids and he's very happy with that choice. One thing that made me happy was being able to share my love of Prince's music with my son especially when he got older, started teaching himself guitar, found his own passion for Prince's music (as well as other artists), and we attended many Prince concerts together. That was extra special. wink

'Tis true, but it ain't important for everyone! Sometimes one's personal journey doesn't include that. And one must come back to his/her personal journey after the nest is empty... razz lol grouphug

Wow! You guys are making me wanta cry. Most of the time all you get is #*!$ talk. I knew we all had it in us. Took time off this evening to watch a flick with my grandson (who I have already introduced to Prince) and you all got sweet on me. Awwwwww.

But seriously, unless you have kids, you might miss out on being a grandparent, and this is one wonderful experience, not to be missed. Love you all.........................

That's so nice that you got to enjoy an evening with your grandson. wink I hope to be one in the future (according to my future daughter-in-law! LOL). Great that you can enjoy this experience and listen to "new" Prince music, too! Don't forget to introduce your grandson to his music (age approriate, of course!) Although I will admit to blasting Prince (appropriate or not! LOL) on the stereo when he was a kid... razz lol

Hey Sea!

P's last three albums are a must hear.

So make sure you listen to them in their entirety. You will find many treasures.
