Why is Jam Of The Year tour so hated here? I was watching JOTY tour live from Vegas oct24 and i noticed the following Prince is very inspired on guitar, there is a lot of guitar playing by Prince and he played amazing solos on One Of Us ,The Cross and all the other songs. Prince is swearing, hes nasty,he is very inspired in2 performances and delivery is strong the show have hits but its not a greatest hits show. so why fans dislike this tour?

IMO it suffered in the same way Emancipation did because of the change of band. Losing Michael B and Sonny, and to a lesser extent the Hornheads, was the end of a great era for me. He lost that 'NPG live band sound' in concert and on record.

I wouldn't say it's a "hated" tour, but back in 1997 it was seen by fans as being "substandard" compared to the tours he did previously. The backing band was so-so talented, the stage production was far below his norm, and there was very little prep time to buy tix beforehand by the fans. Prince was very much in need of $ and doing this tour on the cheap was a quick way to accomplish that goal. He even promoted much of the tour with a little help from Billy Sparks, which also saved a ton of $.
The stage production got better as the tour progressed. He would add different features to it, like the Symbol lighting rig, etc. However nothing could hide the terrible drumming of Kirky J. Michael B was very much so missed.
Those are my 2 cents worth of a answer to your question.

wasnt it set up to make money for his charity? So i dont think he was desperate for money. Alot of it went to charity.

I really regret not seeing it back when he played Mpls in '97 but my father was like "No way" ..so what can you do? But it would have been awesome.

It's not hated by me. I loved that tour, saw it at least 5 times. I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said.

same here...saw it 5 times and loved it. i thought the impromptu nature of the date/venue announcements was a lot of fun. i got to see 3 cities i'd never been to. i got to take my lady to 2 shows. i got to meet and thank prince...i've seen better, i've seen worse. i've never seen a (prince) show i hated. he was all in and threw a great party.

That sounds awesome. How did u get his attention if I may ask? Even if he was right in front of me and seemed like he wanted to chat, I wouldn't have know what to say. Maybe after some liquid courage though...

Partially yes, or at least the early on in 1997. But he was mainly in dire need of $, he was spending freely like it was 1984 but with not so much coming in. If you remember, he fired almost everyone that was left at Paisley Park right after he got back from the Hawaii shows order to save on payroll. This was probably the third purge or so since about 1989.

I thought it was great. But then, I had very good seats and it was the first time seeing him since the Purple Rain tour, when I sat in the nosebleeds. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I wouldn't say I hated it, but it was a huge let down to have a new 3 CD set and hardly anything was played from it. That was a first. I saw 3 regular shows and 2 after shows at Paisley Park. TRUE BLUE

I know some fans theorised about him associating the record with the loss of his baby etc, and there could be something in that, but it's such a shame. Songs like The Holy River and The Love We Make should've been live staples on the JOTY tour. And I'm gutted he never played In This Bed Eye Scream or Joint 2 Joint or FLSMW live. Even in the subsequent years, the only Emancipation cut that got any live in the live shows was The Love We Make.

Hell, I loved it. It was the first time I got to see Prince in concert twice in the same year (July and December). And that December show...OMG!!! Good damn times indeed! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

no idea, it never got to seattle, but one guy who said he saw it complained that prince wouldn't sing the wb hits,he had the band play the songs and let the audience sing them but he wouldn't.

I remember going to the show. The venue had a bunch of empty seats and if I recall it opened with GCS, which was not great. It seemed like Prince was having a tough time connecting with the fans. He was struggling with his faith (Larry filling his head with a bunch of crap), his past and future.
Like everything Prince did, when it was not great it was still pretty dang great when compared to anyone else. But we’ve saw so much better from him than this era. [Edited 12/14/18 10:24am]

i could be wrong about which tour it was, so he didn't do that on ANY tour? I wouldn't know, he took over a decade to play seattle again.
