I own everything on cd, vinyl or digital for collecting purposes. Anyways. I also stream his music because it's easy and you can make playlists. It looks like some people here are clueless about streaming services. If you use Spotify Premium you CAN download everythinh you want and listen off line. You don't need connection.

Clueless? Really? I know exactly how streaming works - including the ability to download and listen off line. But you have to pay for that. I know - I researched all kinds of options when I was looking for an alternative to satellite radio.

Talking about Prince (which is what this thread is about), the clueless thing is paying to listen to music you already own. But what can I say? I'm just stupid like that. rolleyes

Have to admit there are some old folk on here that don’t have a clue, sometimes I wonder if they still travel around town in a horse and cart. The next generation of Prince fans are lot more tech savvy.

Y'know...just yesterday I was reading an article about how college students request absentee ballots - then never send them in because they don't know how (or can't be bothered) to find a postage stamp.

Tell me again how clueless "some old folk" are.

Agreed. "Keeping up with the times" doesn't mean you let every new thing fuck you in the ass 24/7. Sure I pay bills online, but I will also walk into Target and pay on my RedCard personally. I go into my bank to withdraw money.

Streaming music isn't required by anyone just because it's there. Streaming is a compromise to downloading for free. It still cheats the artist. Spotify pays literal pennies per paid per stream. Those of us who treasure music as a tangible and valuable item are willing to pay for an LP or CD for an artist we love. It's why we buy Prince albums for fuck's sake. Just because music is free (mostly) to stream doesn't mean we have to do it.

"Keep up with the times"? If that means being a clueless asshole (which I'm not accusing anywhere here of doing - it's a broad statement, not a specific one), no thanks. I'll stay old school.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

B. 28years was my rough age when I first registered on this site which was a LONG time ago. Prince.org do not auto update your age and I have not bothered updating it either!

C. I am fully aware of the bad deal artists get from the streaming model as Prince stated a long time ago.
D. You can still take advantage of new technology and all the benefits it brings and still respect artist for thier work like I have.

Yes but from my own hard drive via the Plex server, that way I can access my entire collection of digitised Prince music wherever I am from
an app that that has artwork for most of it. I have tabs for albums, 12 inch, associated, boot label or just everything and can shuffle within each tab. I created an instrumental playslist that runs at 15 hours which is great to shuffle.

So I have the app on everything, PS4, phone, iPad. It’s like my own personal Spotify for 1000s of Prince cds and almost 2tb of music and video.

I don't only listen to Prince music so i don't know why you keep repeating 'Paying for music you already own'.

Streaming is cheap and you can listen to 1000000 songs and albums paying the same you have to pay for 1 album.

And YES, some people here are clueless. Repeating they CAN'T stream because WIFI, but if you own a streaming service you can download everything you want and listen everywhere.

This is what I've done. Ripped all my CDs, needle-dropped all my vinyl, dubbed all my cassettes. Mostly I listen to these digital copies, either on my computer connected to my old school audio system or on my iPod classic for on the go. Neither requires an internet connection or is subject to titles being removed as licensing rights shift or expire. A few times a year I'll be in the mood for a "vinyl day", select a stack of wax (heavy with selections from my Prince collection of course) and spend the day flipping discs. But most of the time, it's my own digital library. I never stream. Not tidal, not spotify, not google, not apple, not amazon, not even netflix or any of the other video services. Streaming is renting, my generation bought and owned music.

It depends where I am or what I have in front of me. I'll use Spotify in a pinch. It's also nice if I wanna flip artists or whatever. If I really want to skip commercials, I'll use iTunes.

Commercials?!? I've never used a streaming service, so I had no idea. I don't do commercials for audio or video... I timeshift 100% of the TV shows I watch to avoid commercials. One more reason I have no use for streaming, I guess.

Us old folks are the ones that regularly see threads with people bitching about this or that streaming service no longer having a particular album and then chuckle because our physical copies are still on our shelves and our digital backups are still on our devices. Plus our playlists include associated artists and bootlegs and anything else that isn't available on the streaming services. I can listen to anything in my Prince collection, any time or anywhere without need of a connection and unaffected by changing licensing agreements or the whims of copyright holders. No streaming service can do that.

We do basically the same thing. For you it's convenient to stream for yourself. For me, I have mostly old-school analog equipment. The most convenient option is physically connecting my device (iPod classic or laptop) to my various equipment. I have no desire nor the extra cash to spend on updating all my audio equipment with new digital systems capable of streaming. As long as my analog systems sound as good as they do, I'm happy with an analog connection.

No?

Any negative comments I've made about "streaming" should be applied to using a streaming service. Streaming to yourself from your own library is not what I am talking about when I scoff at streaming. I would guess most here are talking about the services though.

Since I would never listen to a music on a PC or phone, I guess not. My amps and speakers sound much better. They all have physical input connections. Maybe you don't realize the simplicity or the versatility this affords me.

Basically our libraries are the same. The only difference is you are streaming your digital library to your listening device(s) while I physically connect my devices to various audio systems. It's not difficult either.
