Excellent color photo by Allen from when Prince opened for the Stones.

The quality is so clear it looks as though it could have been taken yesterday.

Prior to this photo the only photo we saw from this moment in time was black and white grainy.

I am excited for Allen's book.

Digital photography has been actually inferior to analog for years.
We're only getting there in cinema with 4K resolutions, but it's still inferior to a 70mm analog shooting.

Is it any odder than Led Zeppelin releasing a book without John Bonham? Journey releasing a record without Steve Perry? Chicago without Peter Cetera? Motley Crue touring without Tommy Lee or Vince Neil? Macca doing "Let It Be" without Ringo or John or George?

These are the cards on the table. It's irrelevant to swim in the seas of "yeah but" or "what if". The Revolution is touring right now, and people are still buying tickets and the shows are still selling out left and right. Some whack version of the NPG is doing the same, but that's another show.

The Revolution has always been limited in what they could say, Wendy & Lisa being the exception by being a bit more forthcoming sometimes (to the point that Prince got his panties in a twist about it during the 'fancy lesbian' days, which was utter bullshit on his part). the NDAs are over, and yeah, I want to hear all the stories they have together.

Dez, Brownmark, Allen, Mayte, ...endless people have put out a book or spoken about Prince before and after he died. It's not different. Prince had 57 years to talk about his life beyond music. He chose, for the most part, not to talk at all. So, that door is closed. We can't deal that hand anymore. But for his most popular band to date to sit and write a book together and tell a story about their beacon and their leader - that is as gold as it could get.

Yes. Not a fan of bands that break up but half the band still tours/records as that band. Like what Fleetwood Mac is doing now. Fleetwood Mac without Lindsey Buckingham is not Fleetwood Mac. Just like GNR with out Axl Rose is not GNR. For me it’s different with Prince because he basically was the band whether it was The Revolution, NPG or 3EG. I’ll feel the same way if The Revolution or NPG ever decides to record new music as those bands. I know others disagree.

Agree Rogifan, but I still love to go see the Revolution and NPG. They're the closest it's going to get now to hear the music live, since it was those bands who did play for him. So at least it is authentic.

I struggle with that because I hear someone else singing or playing guitar and want it to be him instead.

You make it sound like Prince was just a member of the band. He WAS the band. He had various backing musicians throughout his career.

You are wrong here though. From 1983-1986 the band was "Prince And The Revolution". They were an official unit. Yes, he was always the leader, but they were an entity. It was never just "Priince" during that time period.

And the Love Symbol album was Prince and The New Power Generation. Of course we know from the 90s on Prince called many different “bands” the NPG. I’d be curious to know when asked who performed Purple Rain how many people would say Prince and The Revolution vs just Prince.

We had a thread about the meaning of the NPG a few years ago, and it seems to mean, the 1991-1995 NPG is considered the band most close to a reflection of New Power Generation

that struggle is real

but I would rather hear people who were a part of the music at the times over some none 'Prince camp' person covering his music

Digital produces better quality in 35 and medium formats than film.

Shoot low ISO slide film on the bast analogue camera you can find with the sharpest lens then have it drum scanned to output size.

Do the same with a 100MP back (or a multi-shot back if shooting still life) and compare. The digital file will be vastly better.

Cost wise you would just compare the cost of film, polaroid, processing, and scanning versus the capital cost of a digital camera plus some costs for software and storage media over say 2 years. Again Digital will most likely come out on top (depending on volumes shot).

The difference is this - the movie, the concerts, the albums, media...ALL of it listed and announced as "Prince and the Revlolution". It was never JUST Prince duirng that time. When Prince formed the NPG - even the first configuration - they were never announced or printed as "Prince and the NPG". It was always or usually just Prince. Prince himself would call out the NPG during shows, but they were not the same entity or unit as the Revolution.

Regarding performing Purple Rain - from 1983-1986 people would say Prince and the Revolution when asked who performed that song, because they were a band/unit in the traditional sense of the word. Refer me to one concert where the NPG were announced as "Prince and the NPG"...

My post stemmed from a comment by paulluvig (I think - post #55) :

You make it sound like Prince was just a member of the band. He WAS the band. He had various backing musicians throughout his career.

My response:

You are wrong here though. From 1983-1986 the band was "Prince And The Revolution". They were an official unit. Yes, he was always the leader, but they were an entity. It was never just "Priince" during that time period.

*

Then rogifan compared the Revolution to the NPG as Prince's "backing band" - or at least I think that it what he was stating. However, there was only one "version" or incarnation of the Revolution - Matt, Mark, Wendy, Lisa and Bobby. He did not have multiple versions of that band. When he broke up the band it was over. There were many different players coming and going in the NPG.

Seriously, we've spent decades with only one or two grainy B&W pics while Allen was sitting on at least half a dozen glorious color pics of this gig?

.

How many treasures are still locked away in the archives of his entourage back then? What's next, someone finding an alternate cut of Purple Rain featuring previously unknown scenes in a box in their basement?

.

Getting so annoyed at this. Same as with all those band members etc. suddenly willing to talk to Duane Tudahl after his book is published.

.

And we likely wouldn't have gotten none of this if Prince hadn't died.

Right...well, the expression on Lisa's face says a lot. No doubt she would not have chosen the Victoria Secret attire, but I'm sure it was mandatory at that time. She got to cover up once Jill Jones came on to the scene wearing the black bra and bikini underwear. Then, thankfully, Prince did away with the lingerie-required dress for The Revolution.

Well, let's not forget that Prince was fond of threats and Cease & Desist letters from his attorneys, so I imagine that these people were not going to put their items and/or stories out there, and risk battling his legal team. Prince had a lot more $$ to spend then they did.

*

I don't blame the band members for waiting to talk to Duane. I imagine they wanted to be sure about the accuracy of the content, the quality of the writing, and also look at who else was contributing.

Yes, but Per didn't set up the book as a day-by-day accounting of the recording sessions. I really liked the setup of the book - chronological with further input from band mates and Engineers about what was happening at that time, and/or the inspiration behind the songs. Also, Duane is stating that his edits for the next issue of his book are new information, so I'm thinking that means "never before heard" details

Funny you say that. One of his old publicists, Karen Lee, was at the PRN Alumni Foundations panel event a couple weeks ago. She talked about finding some reels in the garage at Paisley Park many years ago. She took them with her to California to see what was on them. It turned out to be deleted scenes from Purple Rain. After that, she took them somewhere to see about having them preserved and then back to Paisley Park. She told Prince what she had found and about how she wanted them to be shown at black colleges for students to learn about film making. Prince told her to burn them! She said she was shocked and thought there was no way she was going to burn them. She said she boxed them up and had someone take them to Prince's house on Galpin and put them in the basement. When she heard that the house had been grounded, she wondered what ever happened to them.
