Prince is backwards Do you think that these days Prince looks backwards, instead of forwards, with regards to his music?
In the early days of his career he seemed to take inspiration from pushing things forward, and from current trends like electro, new wave, new romantics, and artists around at the time. Now a days, he seems to be emulating artists who are part of older musical movements. I think it's fair to say that all artists reach their peak, so there is nothing especially different about Prince's decline in musical development, but it's interesting nontheless . Prince can no longer keep up with new trends, so he's moving 'backwards in time'. His last big hit was in 1995, 8 years ago. I think his hanging on to older styles is kind of playing it safe, which is disappointing for P fans and sometimes boring. Yes, all artists reach their peak, but that's never an excuse! Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. Why must everything be put in such defining terms like "backward" and "forward" or "past" and "present"? Time really isn't anything- people always use some kind of past trend of some sort to mold what they have in the future. To the human ear, there are only so many sounds and rhythm time patterns that we can hear with the "naked ear", so there is bound to be a common note that one will hear over and over again. Classical was sampled in hip-hop and still is til this day. Ancient Middle Eastern sounds and ancient East Asian sounds and rhythms have been used in many people's music, and people build on these things to shape new music. Just because someone is in 1/3, 2/4, 4/4 time of rhythms really does not matter. Sure, people could do music that has a really obscure time sequence like 2/13ths, but would it sound good? Maybe to some, and that is why even though Prince (and myself) are more apt to be "funky" or "retro" or whatever, it is what we like, and if folks want to get on board and funk with us, that's cool too.

i disagree. i think he was so far ahead of his sound back in the 80s that only now are others beginning to emulate him and continue that sound.
he's still forward, but he's so forward he's retro, already, if you know what i mean
