It's not gross, calm down. Dead children blown up by US drone strikes is gross. Not this commercial.

It's no different than anyone on YouTube doing karaoke or a cover. They sort of do this every year for the Super Bowl. With Prince having done the Super Bowl show (and a blazing press conference), and JT doing a Prince tribute in Mpls, it is a good fit.

The Org is going to be overrun with unnecessary self-righteous quasi-mania if fans get their panties in a twist every time a Prince song is used in a commercial. The estate was ordered to monetize itself. That includes opening up the rights to license music for those willing to pay for the privilege. If y'all think Prince's estate can just sit and survive on tours & an album a year, you're delusional.

This is a new reality, former rules don't apply. Prince is dead, and if his music lives on in a Super Bowl ad or whatever, so be it. It's better than it being taken off YouTube, Spotify, iTunes and any other outlet for people to listen while half of the back catalog is out of print.

I like it too. Very well done. Not to say that I don't have mixed feelings about it, because I do. But the mixed feelings aren't about the promo, they're about knowing it wouldn't exist if he was still here. I can't blame a great promo on that, it's just how it is.
And the MUSIC continues...forever...

They're going to use this song to death, though. Sooooo many Prince songs. Be more creative, people.

I mean, at this point it's sorta old news that Maroon 5 is performing.

You want them to use Beautiful Strange? Scarlett Pussy? lol

Damn near every artists songs used in commericals are their biggest hits.

BTW I'm glad his music is being licensed and used..he is in the public culture again. I wished he did this back in the lean years 96-2004 when it felt (and it was true) that he was no longer relevant etc. I was always a bit sad telling and playing his music for that period and ppl asking whatever happened to him, saying "He's still around?" etc. There's a lot to be said going indie which includes losing the public eye and awareness. Im sorry, I love the sell out. Just as long as it isnt the K-Tel or NOW98 kind.

Is it embarrassing and cringe-worthy? Yeah, of course, but I don't see how it's "gross". Why are some people so vehemently against anything that might help to keep the memory of Prince alive in the mainstream? I'll take the occasional lame NBC ad if it helps reminds people how good Prince's music was (and this was from February anyway, why are we talking about it now?)

I understand where furry Milty (hi babe) is coming from when he says its gross. Because it kind of is. Gross in the fact that it readily commericalizes the song for some bullshit sports and uses a networks lame as actors acting out the song all for promotion of THEIR programs, which is just sitcoms etc made to raise dollars for ad-revenue. That's gross as a loogie spit in your eye. I get that. And Prince would be pissed as hell at this probably. Having said that I find the extreme sell out refreshing after years and years of artistic integrity (yeah, yeah, I know he's let some commercials made in the past here n there big whoop) for MY OWN selfish reasons of him just being celebrated in commericalism. Those lean years were fucked.

So the Super Bowl is being held kn Minneapolis? A bit weird not to use his music if that's the case. It's not random.

Super Bowl LIII will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, home of the Falcons. It'll be the first Super Bowl hosted at the stadium, which opened in 2017. However, this will be the third Super Bowl played in Atlanta. Feb 3, 2019 on CBS or stream live on CBS All Access.

Welp you can see how much I keep up with football. The one I saw I got the distinct impression it's being g held in Minneapolis, Strange advertising flashing the name Minneapolis instead of Atlanta.

No. Shatner is in it. Instant perfect 10 from me. Also Prince is dead. doesn't care and should have left a will. Who is to blame for what you dislike so much, but i find funny? Yes.. that would be Prince himself. I salute him for this fuckery.

I dug it. James Spader and Shatner? Plus, and as others have said, I like the exposure. I want future generations to be aware of the greatest musician, composer, and performer ever.

Wow. Something is happening, at least in LA, with his image. It's being appropriated by different groups, and put up everywhere. "Vegan Club" posters are common - mostly street art, and some for sale in stores. They use an Under the Cherry Moon-era headshot shot, or sometimes his mug shot. Then I saw a really cool illustration of the Parade album cover in the stall of a restroom, which was for another group, and last week I saw a drawing of his face - Musicology era - on a bumper sticker with the letters "TON" next to it.

.

As a fan, it's a big transition to make. I started following in 1993, when I bought the Hits/B-Sides, and I don't remember Prince ever being "cool" for the masses. I always thought that when he passed, everyone would wake up. It happens a lot - in death, the public figure becomes suddenly becomes safe, not erratic or challenging. Their image becomes malleable, more of whatever you want it to be, and less their own.

Proof it's such a kick-ass composition, it puts up a good mood in any situation.
Take this paradesque amateur arrangement. It's more Strollin' than greasy metal.
It's no Clare Fischer, but hey, some crazy shit going on.

Trouble is, Prince sings like no other man can.
It's fun to hear the limits we all reach when it comes to sing "à la Prince".
Nothing's impossible, though.

Of course, the main thing missing is the Wicked Witcha spirit.

Heck even an hawaian guitar couldn't ridiculize the romantic elegiac pleading
that is "The Beautiful Ones".

I second the exposure, the world needs more Prince, I don't care how.
Some people, once they, by inadvertance, get in touch with one of the many other Prince(s) besides PR,
stick and want to dig deeper. You soon realize this is, was and will always be about the music.
Now matter how and by whom it's performed. You can tell when there's intent.

I like the fact that it's quite long for a spot. It works because the whole song is basically there.
Honestly, you would mind if a neighbour you suspect of basic redneckness suddenly blasted out LGC while he barbecues?
I'd go "finally!".

"Gross". What an odd term. Makes you sound so precious.
Prince was everything but a snob.
