Quite interesting.

The sad parts:

"I should issue the caveat that I’ve had to sign an NDA, so I can’t be specific about a lot of things." --> I can't see why. Speaking would help.

"And you would never consider putting out unfinished work?
Correct. That all gets to stay with the family. There are some things that’ll never emerge." --> Sad. Very honestly I think this won't be a consideration that lasts forever, because music historians will have the last say in a century or so, and they'll want to hear everything. Unfortunately we'll be long gone.

This interview gives me hope. It sounds as if they are handling things correctly. I was very happy to read the word chronologically.

The Piano and Micro phone release really wouldn't have come close to my choice for a first release but I like the way it's been handled and released as stand alone as opposed to being broken down or incorporated into a massive box set. I have warmed to it and am looking forward to receiving my my copy.

Lot's of music and we get P & M 1983... rolleyes

We don't stand much of a chance with the unfinished work cause it stays with the family.

At this rate my grandchildren (which I don't have yet) will be streaming it at my grave.

I give up on hoping that they'll release something that is worth a shit.

And you would never consider putting out unfinished work?
Correct. That all gets to stay with the family. There are some things that’ll never emerge.

Have you successfully competed cataloguing all the items or is this still a work in progress?
I’m very much still finding new things every day.

Do you have an estimate for how much music we’re talking about here?
Yes, but I can’t convey it. It’s lots.

Less than a million or …?
Less.

All I can say is, I hope somewhere in there, they find the finished version of Cosmic Day. beg

yet the very first release is a rehearsal of unfinished, demo versions of some songs that
were later released and others which remain unreleased.

Well if its up to Tyka , everything is going to come out, so they is hope! But its took this long to release one tape demo! When we know there is hundreds of songs in there. Not to mention all the concert recordings, etc. We better not hold our breath!

Exactly. 'Why The Butterflies' is barely a sketch. Clearly, Prince is privately working out material and tentative ideas. It is an inherently incomplete and fragmentary artifact.

Very contradictory interview.

They would never allow unfinished material to be release. Then choose a home tape of unfinished early versions to be the first release.

Feels lazy, rather than legacy building.

This disc does deserve release, but as part of a hardcore 'lost tapes' type box set, or as an extra disc for the 1999 era.

“All these recordings in the vault at some point would see the light of day after I’m gone.” and "That all gets to stay with the family. There are some things that’ll never emerge." sure don't line up too well... hmm rolleyes

So, essentially this is the first release because Michael Howe had a boner for it, and specifically searched for it in the vault. I hope someone with a broader taste and general knowledge of his music is in charge of the releases at some point.

Agreed. It's a wholly unsatisfying listening experience and release.

Worse still, as I wrote earlier, there are far superior recordings of Prince solo at the piano that we're aware of, let alone considering all that is unheard.

He already told this IN JULY.

.

Sheesh, aren't you guys reading anything? There was one major article in July, so it's not like you had to work through thousands of it. And I posted the relevant excerpt in the sticky thread WRT P&AM83 at the time.

IN a way I envy this dude's job and in another way I feel sorry for him. Must be great going through all that stuff but good fucking luck picking out material that will satisfy folks around here. Not sure what people expected but a 20 CD box set with DVD concerts is gonna cost $500 and not only shoot the entire wad but limit its scope to the hardcore audience only.

One solid release a year is fine and a good way to go about it.
