Wtf? And then they compare it to KISS or Alice Cooper? Like, that is Makeup. But not what they did with Prince, his skin color was not Makeup that you can copy. They could've easily just dressed up in costumes that resemble Prince's without painting their faces black. [Edited 9/16/18 8:48am]

Prince's skin was not a costume. Hell, even Prince himself would have had to use blackface to be THAT color. Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

An odd mockery cloaked as a tribute, perhaps? Too bad for the band.

This part cracked me up: “How could someone be upset about it?” she said. “What would make you upset that they remade (Vox) to be (Prince)? … If we saw somebody come up there, and he was 6 feet tall, and he had blonde hair and he came out wearing tennis shoes singing Prince, we’d be like, this is stupid.” -- I love how apparently there is no middle ground here, you either have to wear blackface and commit 110% or you have to go onstage with blonde hair and tennis shoes It's amazing how ignorant some people are, and how quickly they get defensive and double down when somebody points out the offensive nature of their actions.

His so called justifications make it even more annoying. "So much has been written about me, & people don't know what's right & what's wrong. I'd rather let them stay confused." ~ Prince.

so much noise for something totally normal (in Europe at least) We have tv shows where famous people do covers of artists and big part of the show is the costuming, and yes half of the time there's black make-up. You can't make Fats Domino white, can you? It would be even more insulting, and artistically completely incorrect.

- Yeah, that would just look stupid. From the picture of Kris Vox that looks to me like a pretty good Prince costume. Just applying makeup to alter skin color is not the same thing as some truly racist Al Jolson "Mammy" blackface bullshit. Did Fred Armisen get the same kind of flak for altering his skin tone to satirize Prince?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I have to disagree about Vox's costume. The skin tone is inacurate and doesn't even look human to me. This is of course besides the point. Their intent may not be to put on a show that is "truly racist" but this band is profiting off of a black man and doing so by employing the same practice that has its roots in the Al Jolson bullshit. That is problematic. This is a sensitive issue in the US and I believe opposition to the practice is somewhat gaining traction in Europe as well (ie black Pete)

At the VERY MINIMUM poor judgement. I don't know how in this day and age that anyone would even consider this. That said, the picture in the article was considerably less horrible than I thought it would be.
...but still, unbelievable.

. It was "less horrible" because it's just not blackface. Blackface is defined as "theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person". The key word there is caricature, which is an extreme portrayal intended to be grotesque or comic. . I don't think that's what is being done here. Just my opinion though. >

huh | |

I agree, and that's what I meant by "less horrible." That said, it is well know sensitive subject. I thought I was going to see some ignorant fools actually performing in black face, and was relieved that was not the case. I still think it was poor judgement to even approach something that would bring comparison, and not worth any visual benefit.

At least tell us there is a fucking paywall for ad blockers, bad manners. Can't read it. . Anyway Blackface is the height of offensiveness, people put on burnt cork and painted on big red lips to do minstrely which basically mocked Black People and their culture. It was part of the whole White people racism against Blacks who were humiliated, denigrated and oppressed by satanic white racism. . It largely disappeared in the 1960s, but under Trumpist fascism, this and other types of racism have returned and its is obvious some whiteys are saying what they really feel about us. Anybody who thinks this is harmless fun and lampooning should resign their membership. In case you have not forgotten Prince was African American (Black for you Trump voting trogdolytes). Even worse is that Prince was very light skinned and did not look that dark or much like a stereotype Black face performer. [Edited 9/18/18 20:00pm] I got plenty good loving for ya baby

The fact that you guys think it looks "less horrible" than expected does not change the denotative definition of the horribly offensive practice. Saying that it isn't exaggerated enough to be blackface is to suggest it is therefore somehow less insensitive; that type of rhetoric can be harmful. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I personally think it looks inhuman, weird, you may even say "grotesque."

I'm on mobile and surprised considering my phone is a piece of crap.

Just offensive. They should let the music do the talking for them. Would have been better to just perform in Prince inspired clothing. But like they say, you can fix ugly, but you can't fix stupid. Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

They could totally be busted on that deicsion based on their excuse of portraying what someone looked like visually, because Prince was actually quite pale skinned in his pop persona. You don't get much sun at nights in the studio. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
