Yeah, that would just look stupid. From the picture of Kris Vox that looks to me like a pretty good Prince costume. Just applying makeup to alter skin color is not the same thing as some truly racist Al Jolson "Mammy" blackface bullshit. Did Fred Armisen get the same kind of flak for altering his skin tone to satirize Prince?

At the VERY MINIMUM poor judgement. I don't know how in this day and age that anyone would even consider this. That said, the picture in the article was considerably less horrible than I thought it would be.

It was "less horrible" because it's just not blackface. Blackface is defined as "theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person". The key word there is caricature, which is an extreme portrayal intended to be grotesque or comic.

I agree, and that's what I meant by "less horrible." That said, it is well know sensitive subject. I thought I was going to see some ignorant fools actually performing in black face, and was relieved that was not the case. I still think it was poor judgement to even approach something that would bring comparison, and not worth any visual benefit.

My bad about the paywall but I'm viewing the article fine with no ads and no subscriptions. No idea anyone else would have trouble. I'm on mobile and surprised considering my phone is a piece of crap.

I was on desktop and outside of the USA, also I use Adblocker Plus, so not sure if theres a better one or not, it blocks youtube ads which is fine with me.

They could totally be busted on that deicsion based on their excuse of portraying what someone looked like visually, because Prince was actually quite pale skinned in his pop persona. You don't get much sun at nights in the studio.

It reminds me of when the comedy group The Jackson Jive performed in blackface on an Australian TV talent show and guest judge Harry Connick Jr. was aghast while the other Aussie judges were like, "what's the problem?"
