There is no need to make excuses. Maybe George Harrison lifting the the tune to He's So Fine for his own song My Sweet Lord was his attempt to raise the profile of the Chiffons. That's not how it works. If Prince wanted to raise someone's profile he would have just covered the song. How is stealing the music for an obscure song and replacing the lyrics going to do anything for the obscure artist is no one knows who she is? It’s not the exact music. Prince added an extra chord.

I don't agree - it's a really simple song, a lot of those licks are what anyone would improvise on the spot in that key. Possibly it was an influence, but the song is so basic, I could totally see it springing up independently. Can you find an example of another song that sounds this similar? ufoclub said: Here is is, I think Prince took the mood and musical idea (reverb, chorus voice arrangement, and all) of this and made his own song "I Hate U" Haven't you caused enough shit with Colonized Mind, now you're opening another can of worms with I Hate U

I really like the song apart from the verses where he mentions what happens to a child without a mother or a father. I don't think the parent's gender matters that much. full lips, freckles, and upturned nose

well you must either be a woman or an adult gay male who's mother bonded. It matters a helluva lot. that's why nature made us the way were are. I've dealt with plenty of momma's boys and they are useless, absolutely useless.

I asking specifically for another 3rd instance of the common sound of Quit It / Colonized Mind to prove that it is a generic common song "shape" (chords, leadlines, vocals, tone). My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I did not say that he said it. I am stating my opinion. . The baselines in the two songs sound almost identical. Prince's rhythmic guitar obscures the baseline because the rhythic guitar basically plays throughout the whole song. . The guitar solo at 3:04 in Colonized Mind sounds like the same notes as the piiano solo from 2:53-3:03 in Quit it. . Cloud nine, no responsibility, you're floating in space feeling good (Quit It) 8 syllables Down low, no responsibility, do what you want nobody cares. (Colonized Mind) 8 syllables . I can't think of any other Prince songs that contain the phrase "No responsibility" besides Colonized Mind. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

I love it. This one and Dreamer are my favourites from Lotus. I appreciate the sentiment. "So much has been written about me, & people don't know what's right & what's wrong. I'd rather let them stay confused." ~ Prince.

ya, funny how one fell to obscurity and the other became a classic, luck and place have a lot to do with success.

I'd consider that Bobby Caldwell song an R&B classic, but I wouldn't have ever framed it as an inspriation for "I Hate U." There are so many existing songs in that vein, only without those glorious organ riffs and guitar whelps that P & the NPG do--just sayin'.

My reasoning would be Prince being sly, just riding the line between insouience to personal shame (and lawsuits) and instead of burying the credit in liner notes, allowing astute people like us (his audience) to announce the true origin of the music, song, and its author, and motivate the ambiguous masses to rise up and take note while digging the presumed disgrace. Y'know? Nothing like a little scandal, Prince-style, to make a moment of popularity growth manifest! No excuses. > Take it as U wish! [Edited 9/18/18 12:18pm] [Edited 9/18/18 12:19pm]

women raising sons is bad, i don't know why so many people defend that. it doesn't work. of course there will be exceptions who turn out ok but by and large they are just what I said, I'm not talking gay men/sexuality, the reason I mentioned gay men was that it seems many gay men will argue against the idea of needing a father when they can't even see the problems it might cause. For whatever reason, probably because I'm a nice guy, momma's boys (actually grown men) and boys (again, men) who had a father who wasn't really that involved with him gravitate towards me, maybe it's not because i'm a nice guy, maybe it's because they know they need someone to guide them, i really don't know but I've had to cut off several, they won't listen, i don't know who's going to put up with them but not me.

Well, The Caldwell song is pretty distinctive--to the point that I'd call it a classic R&B single, but not similar enough in its pattern & stlyle to ring a bell as the basis for that Prince tune! The bass, drums, and keyboards in the Prince song sound to me like nothing other than some NPG-jamming. I'll take a stab and suggest another song that sounds more similar as Caldwell's to me than "I Hate U." I might not be able to hear what you're getting at in comparison, though. >
> As far as music in the vein of mid-tempo with spoken-lyric inculsion (as the style of "I Hate U") is concerned, all other characteristics aside, my guess is there could be a list large enough to fill a large bucket.
