Did Prince have a method behind when he used his Hohner vs his Fender?

I’ve watched a lot of live footage and it seemed kind of random as far as which guitar he would use. The only thing that seemed consistent was using his Hohner when he played more funk/rhythm guitar. Perhaps whichever one was in tune or he felt playing at that moment?

I'd say he did whatever every guitar player does, picked the guitar that inspired him at a given moment, or picked a guitar with the right tone for whatever line he wanted to play. As you say, the Madcat was his default one for funky rhythm playing.

He almost never played Fender guitars though, only later in his career when he was getting into use of tremolo, and even then he'd have a big EMG bridge humbucker on there so it became a cloud alternative more than anything, for his lead playing. Personally I found it a bit of a shame to stick EMGs into a strat.
