Rock Hard In a Funky Place
Camille Project the Black Album
Prince Atlanta Bliss Susannah Melvoin
There isn't much background information on the Black album cuts, yet. and Cat in an interview said: The Black Album was the first time Prince got me on tape recording. It was intense. I can't even go into that right now, because, it's too intense. The album didn't really have any production. It was spur of the moment. The Black Album was about personal things he was going through, which is why I don't want to discuss it. Along with others who took part in the album.
Basic tracking took place on 28 October 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California -PrinceVault

"Sheila E, and I were in Los Angeles, doing The Tonight Show with my brother Alan that night," remembers Eric Leeds. "Early the next morning, at the airport, Alan said, all jaunty, 'Okay, got some news for you!" laughs Eric, "and my first reaction was 'Oh shit!' I was very disappointed that it was shelved for a very practical reason-I owned a song on that album!" To lose out was the brilliant "Rock Hard in a Funky Place," including Eric's nasty sax line (plucked from an unreleased, jazzy Leeds original called "Peaemaker").

On Oct. 28, 1986, Prince recorded a slinky, horn-heavy song named "Rockhard in a Funky Place." It would spend the next 14 months lined up for release on three shelved albums -- and then vanish (legally speaking, anyway) for another seven years. The song's distinctive horn line was crafted by saxophonist Eric Leeds. "It’s just the melody of a song of mine called ‘Pacemaker,'" he told the Prince Podcast. "Prince wanted this line for 'Rockhard in a Funky Place,' and I think I had it half done. He wanted something that was really out there. So I kind of completed the line for that."

I guess I've been wrong this whole time?! I thought the lyrics was "but he couldn't concentrate sitting next to her"...I like y'alls version better!

Lots of handwitten lyrics have hit the market lately, wish this one was out there as well, so we could check the lyrics. >>

The guitar in this is so filthy and rude! Hi-yo Silver, it's The Bone Ranger!

There are always parts of songs that seem to be saying something that are different from the lyrics
Like when he yells "Come back Nikki Come back..." what he says after that I have to bend the printed lyrics in my mind to fit what he is screaming on the album

Thanks for posting that Old Friends...I always thought the line was "dick so hard" too. One of my favorite P guitar solos too.

I think this was Prince at the top of his game. It's a song that sounds so effortless that some might think it throwaway, but it's actually brilliant - It's Prince commanding his talent, band and station at that specific time. It's not artsy-fartsy or too deep (both modes of Prince which I love), but I think it's confident and cool in a uniquely Prince way. It's also funny and funky as fuck, so what more could you ask for?

Just love it and whole heartedly endorse all you have 2 say. Dirty, but dirty funky too - this is pure nasty ass Prince (Camille). It is like he is poking his tongue out at us why he sings it. I ain't going to say anymore as you guys have pretty much said it all. . Camille may have been scared of Spooky Electric and all that he crawls for, but in reality she was just a bitch ho bitch and a nasty ho as Sheila may put it. Camille is the shit. She/he knew that life wasn't a game of cards motherfucker. Sorry feeling a bit craazzaayyy today. [Edited 9/11/18 18:18pm] I got plenty good loving for ya baby

Well put. It’s the type of cool urbane funky song that still sounds fresh today.

Props to Eric, I just LOVE that sax line! All this time I listened to this track just waiting for that killer sax line to come up, but never really payed too much attention to the lyrics until I saw them posted here lol. It’s a very silly/vulgar song, but damn is it badass!

He had an epiphany on the night of Dec 1 1987, meeting Ingrid Chavez and then seeing his name spelt out in flowers, and realising if he was 2 die and his soul 2 take, he would be judged by the last thing he left behind, the evil Black Album. He realised Spooky Electric had made Camille create something evil, called the Black Album, Camille started 2 cry, for Spooky Electric was all he crawled for but God, Love and Positivity embolded Camille thru the power of Lovesexy and the Black album was blown away - now Camille had seen the light and the power of Lovesexy. The rain began 2 fall as God helped create a divine masterpiece. Spooky electric had not been killed, but he was neutralised in the belly of the beast, for Lovesexy is the 1 until his job is done, he crossed over the line. . Sorry ahd to entertain this guy [Edited 9/13/18 20:58pm] I got plenty good loving for ya baby
