Sephora is launching this "Witch Starter Kit" October. My feeling are Prince would Hell No this! Without the estate approval how can his symbol be used, not to mention his beliefs are not aligned.

SUE SEPHORA! That is a worse enfringment for use of the symbol than any Eye Records release!

I think its inspired by this vintage tarot card but I wonder how long this version of the card has been around. This is weird.

Because those are alchemy symbols and much older than any copyrighted design for Prince.

but the little 'Prince specific' curlique..... it's just an odd choice from the graphics design.. I mean, who DOESN'T know that is the love/Prince symbol? My 92 yr old aunt recognizes it. I realize I live in a purple bubble, but that symbol...

I knew of the alchemy symbols but not the Empress tarot card one.

Prince was an alchemist. His music is alchemy. Not only the lyrics (Diamonds and Pearls is a hint to St. Germain, one of the most famous alchemists, Gold and Crystal Ball or other references) but the music itself. Composition is a form of alchemy.
When I say he was an alchemist people will often laugh before even thinking about it, shake their heads or just don't understand it. It's okay, it's not my job to convince anyone, but with Prince, one just needs to understand that nothing was coincidence or random. He knew things.

As for soapstone - some say soapstone is the infamous "Philosopher's Stone" which is the basic tool for any alchemy process.

I heard that the witch kit is being pulled before its release due to backlash surrounding it (mostly becase of other things they addressed, they didn't say as much at all about the artwork on it).

I guessing they got a C&D.

According to the QZ article linked above, the company took it from a stock image website.

Following it through it takes you to an artist called Samira May. I assume she did this recently (ie. knowing it's P's symbol but would be interested to hear if she claims its from another older source? (A google search for other empress cards shows the female symbol but not the P symbol).

The QZ article also links to a wired.com article where it says the 'Love' symbol was designed on commission for Prince by Mitch Monson and Lizz Luce from design agency HDMG in 1992.

However, it must be noted that a similar (possible early version?) symbol was worn by Prince in the Graffiti Bridge era.

yeah, there was a huge uproar about it online in the witch communities. though a few posts made on it mentioned Prince's symbol, most of the people were focused on other things. I think the use of white sage was one of the big ones before they knew where it was sourced from?

tbh i was a lot more invested in Prince's symbol being involved than what most people there were mentioning, so I'm not as up to date on a lot of people about the other reasons, but considering sephora/pinrose only mentioned very little in their cancellation about the artwork, and went on at length about the sage and other stuff, the use of Prince's symbol was probably only a very small factor, if a factor at all, it the cancellation.
