I love the album overall, but it is not as strong as SOTT or Lovesexy.

.

Best cuts are Le Grind, When 2R in Love and Bob George. The rest is still good and only 2Nigs is a bit muzakky, and even that has all that funny talking at the stuff about Bitch ho bitch and fuck a me pumps.

.

Cindy C is hilarious too with his screaming "CINDY DON'T U WANT 2 PLAY WITH ME??? ........AAAARGGGHHHHH, Shockadelica!" lol lol lol lol It is easily one of the funniest and silliest albums he made, its more zany than dark in my opinion and self deprecating "Prince, that skinny muthafucka with the high voice"

.

The 3 sets of Shift/Return not working the text is still clumped together. Is there a difference between American and British keyboards?

But when I think of "When 2 R In Love", it's The Black Album's, not Lovesexy. I feel it is poached onto Lovesexy.

I always thought "Scandalous" and "When 2 R In Love" were like... night time love songs if that makes sense. So to have it on the Black album that fits the vibe more than a "washed out, perched in a daytime flower petal" vibe.

The official CD version is awful because they tampered with the mix. I heard the non-bootleg 1987 vinyl and it sounds totally different. It gives you the same feeling when listening to SOTT and Madhouse

We have to agree to disagree, its more at home on Sign or even Diamonds and Pearls. But I feel it would belong more to Lovesexy as the song is a smooth seduction ballad, that is at home with the lush grooves and positive vibes on Lovesexy, whereas everything on Black is raw, in yo face, rough and crude (Rock hard in a funky place etc).

.

Still I respect your opinion, but When 2 R in love is an orphan on either album, despite the fact its in my Top 10 of all time Favourite Prince cuts.

"When 2 R In Love" is definitely not the same as the other Black Album cuts, but it adds balance simply by being a slow jam.

How many of you are skipping Piano & Microphone because you've had the bootleg? None hopefully,

Hmmm... I was under the impression that most, if not all, the boots were sourced from the 87 vinyl.

Maybe the 1st generation ones were and good quality exists, but just reading this thread it seems for 90% of us, it was 3rd or 4th generation boots our 8th generation boot cassettes were sourced from.

.

Myself personally, I didn't get into Prince until 1991 and got my 29th generation lol boot in late 1993 from a less than reputable source, god only knows how many generations came between it and a vinyl copy of the Black album - but the history of it could become the greatest story ever told lol

Yes, and I regret it. I was 12 when I found my first copy (I was a precocious child) – by the time the official one was released I had 3, one of which was pretty good quality with 7 or 8 bonus tracks including “Wonderful Ass”. God, I loved that CD. biggrin

* TBA is one of my favourites by the way - I was just young and skint and had 3 copies (none of which were cheap).

I spent entire evenings "remastering" my Generation X from cassette to reel tape (a 2-track TASCAM monster, what a great sound) through a 2 x 31 band equalizer. Then an arguably louche friend of mine had the lurid idea to sold this version of mine to hungry fans, so it is possible that some parisian orgers had their hands on my (desperate) attempt at fixing the wall of hiss and the floppy bass. If I say 11th...

Makes me feel like John the Baptist or somethin', spreading the Bible around, I swear to God. Except greed sneaked in the house of the Good Lord. Bravely, I casted myself away. Who knows what I would have become. Maybe an Eye (for an eye) Record crook. An extremist of the Dolby™ C. Lawd have mercy.

I've had Cold Coffee & Cocaine for ages and ordered the deluxe version of P&M.

But I tell you what - if there isn't a download included with P&M, I'll be getting another (lossless) boot of the official release. I have neither the means (my computer doesn't have a disc drive) nor the time to rip this stuff anymore.

Not me, because no one I ever knew had a great copy of it. So to have it on CD at the time was a blessing. There were only what - 500K copies pressed? So yeah, I jumped right on it to have a clean copy. The rub of that is that it's so deeply rooted in 80s analog, it sounds muddy anyway. But less muddy than the 4th or 5th generation tape I had.

Same here. had the bootleg for a few years by the time the limited edition cd was issued. Bought two copies: 1 to listen to the other to keep in mint condition.

"When 2 R In Love" is definitely not the same as the other Black Album cuts, but it adds balance simply by being a slow jam.

To me it sounds too pure and innocent to be on the Black Album.

And soundwise, it is perfect for Lovesexy.

It belongs on both. To me the two albums are so closely linked that they would have made an awesome double album. Black on one side, white on the other, joined at the hip by W2RIL - the dark vs the light. The analog funk followed by the synthesized new power soul. The death of Camille followed by the birth of the new power generation.

What a double album that would have been. That is practically what the Lovesexy live show was anyway.

Instead, TBA became nothing but a contract filler with little love or attention and Lovesexy undersold because, well I dunno, because naked Prince made Americans blush.

Since neither the original nor the 1994 release had any artwork, the ONLY reason to buy it was sound quality. Since the sound quality was necessarily better than any boot you would think anyone who liked the music would have boght it.
