Indeed it was. It's good that they were removed. Hopefully now that most of the main catalogue is available everywhere, the Estate will startdoing something about the side projects and Paisley Park catalogue. The only stuff legally available on streaming services right now is Prince's WB releases and the post 1995 stuff that Sony uploaded recently. So, Prince's official albums (and even then there's a few missing).
Any live shows you see on there are illegal. Most protege acts on there shouldn't be there, unless Warners has already reissued them in recent years like The Time and Sheila E. Stuff that came out on the Paisley Park and NPG labels definitely will be an illegal upload if you see it there - Mazarati, The Family, Madhouse, Goldnigga etc. Albums that came out as a joint venture via Paisley Park and another label could be on there depending on if the other label involved has the rights to do so. So you might well see something like Tony LeMans album since that was a joint venture with Reprise, same with Taja, but only if Reprise (which, confusingly, is also owned by WB) decide to repress and have the rights to do so without license from the Prince Estate (assuming The Prince Estate has no plans of it own to reissue or reprint the Paisley Park or NPG catalog releases any time soon). |

That whole situation is confusing. We know for a fact that some records are owned by WB and some others by the Estate since 1994, but there are certain things that are confusing. For example Alan Leeds said that after 87 or so artists were signed directly on PP (hence the masters for those reverting to Prince in 94) but TC Ellis explained that he negociated his deal with WB (while Eric said he negociated his own with Prince, at about the same time). The joint ventures are even more confusing. We know WB owns Pandemonium (a Reprise joint venture). The fact that Taja'a second record was released on Reprise suggests she was always a WB deal (I think she was signed in the very early days of PP, 85 or early 86). Tony LeMans I'm not sure, and the fate of the TDK/PP Kahoru Kohuruimaki releases is even more mysterious. Also confusing is Prince copyrighting the names Mazarati and Good Question in the mid 2000s. I can't imagine he planned a Good Question remaster lol. As for Madhouse, however, we're almost certain the Estate owns both records since Prince was planning to rerelease them on NPG Records along a few other PP releases circa 95-95.
