True or not, I absolutely love this. As I ice skate in my entirely bovine fashion, I often think about Prince. Well, I often think about Prince no matter what I'm doing. But, I've frequently wondered if he did ice skate. Certainly, as is stated, his home state would be quite conducive to that activity. And he did mention skating a couple times in his lyrics, although it was unclear if it was in reference to roller or ice. Regardless, if he did skate, we all know he would have been superb at it.

Highly Athletic, MN is known as the land of 10,000 lakes, in one of the coldest regions in the country. Odds are pretty good he tried it once or twice.

Time keeps on slipping into the future...

I would say this is possible. The author of the story was in Canada, and Prince had a house there at that time. My only thought would be, when would Prince have had the time to become a very good skater if he was always practicing and playing music as a kid/teen in MN?? Probably only someone like Tyka, Andre, or Morris could confirm his ice skating skills....

I can do both, but roller skating/inline skating is much easier for me than ice skating. Thick wheel base vs. very thin blade. And the author of the story was describing more than just basic skating. Although, Prince did spins, jumps, splits and lots of running in those 3-4 inch heels, which takes quite a bit of balance, so who knows...

We grew up in the seventies so of course he roller skated, I'm sure he could ice skate as well.

Interesting story. It says that 'The Dove' was written and produced by Clive Desmond,a writer from Toronto so I believe that it may be fictional but I enjoyed listening to it and I think it was well done. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, most likely fiction...but a great story nonetheless!! The guy doing the audio kept it very entertaining. Loved his very monotone, nonchalant voice throughout the story.

This is an obvious, stupid fake story that serves no purpose but to identify gullible people.
But before i said that here, I checked with someone who would know.
It's total bullshit.

Yes, it is.....BUT entertaining in the sense of picturing Prince skating on a deserted Canadian ice rink in lime green suit and skates. Very creative, clever writing biggrin

I agree. I also thought the sound effects were a nice touch. Some seemed to believe it to be factual from what I saw posted elsewhere.

Nothing factual about it.
My source was very close to him during the period he was in Toronto.
He was physically incapable oF ice skating. He could roller skate but infrequently and for short periods.

The story was meant to be a short, creative narrative like others on the podcast, though some seemed to believe it to be an actual encounter. Thanks for sharing what you were told by your source.

biggrin Rollerskating was big in the 70's. I was a kid then, and we were skating at place called "Skateland" every weekend.

*

Also, there's a story out there about Prince and either a girl he was dating or an associate in his camp going roller skating with, I believe, Eddie Murphy and his wife - or some other celebrity and his wife. Just can't remember who told the story. And the fact that Prince and the "Gameboyz" crew are roller skating in the Gangster Glam video shows that he most likely put on skates once in awhile...

Questlove told a story like that and said that Prince had a pair of skates that lit up when they touched the floor and that he carried them in a special case. He said he was quite skilled DJ Rashida said on Arsenio that she went skating with him as well. Here's Questlove telling one version of the story www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9QmFfZ2LHU

That's the one!!! Thanks Pink! I knew I had either heard or read a story about Prince rollerskating with some folks and being very good at it too. I thought I also read that in addition to biking around PP he also liked to inline skate.

You're welcome! He said in another video that Prince was skating backwards and doing pirrouttes. Would have loved to have seen that! He also said that it was a party that he threw on Valentines Night for Mani and the other couples included Larry Graham and his wife. Rashida said on Arsenio that he skated like he danced and that he was quite good.

Yes, that's right, it was with Manuela. Maybe the ice skating story is true after all biggrin

I was joking. The ice skating story is not true but Questlove's roller skating story seemed to be since DJ Rashida said something similar.

It's probably a fake story but if Prince wanted to ice skate he could have and he would have killed it. The man wasn't only athletically inclined, he was also coordinated as hell. He would have been a natural.
