I've been saying that for twenty years. Prince failing to open his archives and curate his back catalog was always a massive error, especially when the music industry was collapsing. It's not like his fans were saving their money for the "inevitable" release of those vault contents.

.

Quite frankly most of the contents of those vaults should have been released over the years, and his estate should simply be maintaining that catalog and perhaps configure new box sets with material that would be of interets mostly to hardcore fans.

Although I agree with you (as most often) it was much easier forgiving Prince those bad choices than it is nog with the estate. Prince often showed very bad business sence, but he was an artist brilliant enough to make up for it. The estate's main purpose is making money, and they're not doing it very well.

.

The estate is also crippled by the lack of a will and the uncertainty WRT ownership of the vault's contents (i.e. does Warners have a claim WRT the songs recorded pre-1996 as being recorded a spart of a WBR contract).

Prince is dead.

WB has no active CONtract w.r.t. releases to be produced.

So they might want licensing/royalties/etc for any vault stuff, they do not dictate whatever is released I hope.

Where is the 'creative freedom'?

Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings will release in November, the Bob Dylan box set that fans have really been waiting for. More Blood, More Tracks: The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 will be available as a six-CD set that includes “every surviving take” (including the complete New York sessions) from the 1974 studio recordings made by Bob Dylan which resulted in his 1975 classic Blood On The Tracks.

.

Described by the label as a ‘strictly limited’ deluxe set, this six-disc package features alternate versions of ‘Tangled Up In Blue’ , ‘Simple Twist Of Fate’ and ‘Shelter From The Storm’ and offers up a total of over 70 previously unreleased recordings! The 6CD deluxe of More Blood, More Tracks (there is also a 2LP vinyl and a single CD edition) includes the complete New York sessions in chronological order, including outtakes, false starts and ‘studio banter’.

.

Strange, I could have sworn that Prince fans always claim these kind of box sets are impossible.

Up to now we must assume that the Estate is in a parallel universe versus slightly similar estates.

Until the money starts running out that may remain.

Same thing as what the Jackson estate is doing, they need to make the money now so that people with a history and attachment to the music can spend, they might be surprised how easily they make a profilt.

IDK how much of this is true, and how definitive it is. Sharon also said here that an online store wasn't out of the question so there's hope, but I'm quite outraged by this statement. I'm 41, my life expectation is about 80 years old (it might have increased dramatically by then, given how fast science moves, but I could also die from a cancer before I'm 50 for all I know). Most of us are over 40, over 50 for the older fans, and most of us won't live much longer than a few more decades. And we're being told that while thousands of songs, rehearsals and live shows are stored in the vault we can't expect more than one record a year before we die? And that kids who weren't even born when Prince was alive are to get the rest of it later, after we who supported Prince all thoughout his career will be long gone? no no no!

.

While I understand that they need a prestigious, mainstream audience release a year and little more for the general public and music press, I also know that most of us are willing and able to purchase an album's worth of material every month, NPGMC-style. We did it in 2001, and we'd do it again. So why not do that, too?

.

I don't wanna sound dramatic: I enjoy and listen to a lot of other music, and I have enough Prince music on my drive, more than most artists' fans could ever dream of. I have things going on in my life, I don't depend on Prince to be happy, so I can live with that. But nevertheless, I've devoted lots of time and money into my passion for Prince's music, and I can't help finding such a statement super frustrating. There's too much music in that vault, it's gotta come out!

.

Y'all with me on that?

.

[Edited 8/27/18 13:27pm]

The over 50 crowd don't have much to complain about from my perspective. When is the last time the estate did anything to attract us younger folks? When have they released anything NPG related? Since 2016 EVERY RELEASE has been targeted at those old enough to be my parents and grandparents. I have yet to see anything released that is my age and after it. The Prince 4Ever CD had just 2 NPG songs on it. The only non 80s stuff that I have seen come out was Mayte's Book. You guys have gotten the an Expanded and Deluxe versions of Purple Rain with a DVD. The most favorite book about the studio sessions of 1984 by Duane Tudahl. From my side of the age scale? You guys are getting handed stuff left and right. Personally I'm tired of having the 70s and 80s stuff thrown my way with the expectation that I'm suppose to buy it and be just as thrilled when it doesn't even relate to my era. I love old school but not when it being done as unbalanced as this is. In my mind the heirs and those running the estate don't care one bit about us younger folks or the kids yet to be born. They are only focusing on the older crowd.

To state the obvious: these are done in a way that the PR thing should have been done as was their idea at some point in time.

The fact of the way they actually released PR shows they are in a parallel universe.

As you always tell people: don't make up shit.

Sales were more than "a few thousand" and you have never been able to provide a single element of evidence supporting your theory that Prince wanted to, but could not get a major distributor (or that Kobalt dropped Prince, as you've often claimed).

Just stick to the fact or, when offering a personal theory, make it clear that it's just that.

I'll be 51 in a few days. Hell, I don't have forever to wait for things to be released at a slow pace. They should release around three albums a year, starting with the early 1980s material and then start on the late 1980s past the "Purple Rain" era. Once they make it past the 1980s material, I could care less what they release.

.

We're the ones that made Prince a star so we're the ones that should get the jams while we're still living. These little brats today could care less about Prince music and the brats of the future could care even less. Even if his music does make a huge impact in the distant future, why the hell should I care? I won't be around to hear it. Give it to me while I'm still here.

Yes, it's utterly impossible. No other artist has ever done this.

.

I mean, no artist has ever released box sets with dozens of records documenting whole tours or entire album sessions, right?

.

I mean, I'm clearly making this up:

.

https://burningshed.com/s...les_boxset

.

.

Obviously, this would be impossible for Prince because he was never as popular as... uhm... King Crimson?

.

Or how about https://www.rhino.com/pro...e-sessions ?

.

What you have known for almost thirty years as a 36-minute long proto-punk masterpiece is now presented in its complete 7-hour and 52-minute recording session entirety — that's more than seven hours of previously unreleased recordings from Iggy and company. Every take from every Fun House session, in order, exactly as The Stooges recorded them -- all the music, mayhem, false starts, inside jokes, and equipment hum. Everything on this 7-CD set has been remastered from scratch from the original multi-tracks.

.

Yeah, how dare we expect similar output from Prince or his estate! Clearly it is impossible to release such lavish box sets for an artist who wasn't as popular as... uhm... The Stooges?

By the standards of Dylan's Bootleg Series, one release a year is unfortunately pretty good. The upcoming release is #14, in a series that started in 1991. It's also - just now - covering the alternate version of his most beloved album, which is bonkers. 27 years to release music most Dylan fans expected a long time ago.

.

Does any other artist, alive or dead, run their own npgmc-style music club? Truly asking, I have no idea. Given the volume of Prince's unreleased music, it seems like a no brainer, to make money off the collections too obscure for the general public to buy. Let alone the general public in 2043.

.

My fears: 1. faux albums, like Sony has credited to Michael Jackson. 2. historically incorrect collections, like the Warners PR Deluxe - which shoe-horned in songs that had nothing to do with Purple Rain, 3. more 35 minute morsels, because Piano and Microphone 1983 got good reviews, and appears to have sold well.

You are usually providing factual contributions to this board and you know I respect you for that and appreciate those contrubutions. But when it comes to making a point that Prince was over and done, a personal agenda that you have been pursuing for many years for yet-to-be-elucidated reasons, you have been known to twist events or, at best, draw definitive conclusions from very vague circumstantial evidence. All I'm asking is that you please refrain from doing that. There are too many people talking nonsense and trying to bend reality to their wishes in this community. I know you have the judgement not to do that, and when you don't your contributions are really valuable, so please just don't wink
