One collection of unreleased music a year, says Tyka.

"Using the 1983 tape as a starting point, Tyka Nelson says the estate is hoping to unveil a new collection of unreleased music every year", "If it was up to me, we’d see something every year for the next hundred or thousand years"

IDK how much of this is true, and how definitive it is. Sharon also said here that an online store wasn't out of the question so there's hope, but I'm quite outraged by this statement. I'm 41, my life expectation is about 80 years old (it might have increased dramatically by then, given how fast science moves, but I could also die from a cancer before I'm 50 for all I know). Most of us are over 40, over 50 for the older fans, and most of us won't live much longer than a few more decades. And we're being told that while thousands of songs, rehearsals and live shows are stored in the vault we can't expect more than one record a year before we die? And that kids who weren't even born when Prince was alive are to get the rest of it later, after we who supported Prince all thoughout his career will be long gone? no no no!

.

While I understand that they need a prestigious, mainstream audience release a year and little more for the general public and music press, I also know that most of us are willing and able to purchase an album's worth of material every month, NPGMC-style. We did it in 2001, and we'd do it again. So why not do that, too?

.

I don't wanna sound dramatic: I enjoy and listen to a lot of other music, and I have enough Prince music on my drive, more than most artists' fans could ever dream of. I have things going on in my life, I don't depend on Prince to be happy, so I can live with that. But nevertheless, I've devoted lots of time and money into my passion for Prince's music, and I can't help finding such a statement super frustrating. There's too much music in that vault, it's gotta come out!

.

Y'all with me on that?

I'm with you on it.

They are slowly but surely alienating the Prince fans. As you said we aren't getting any younger. I was 17 when I started following Prince I'm 55 now. And now we are at 1 collection a year and in Sept it will be P&M 1983....big deal.

Yeah and this first year is wasted with a release of only 35 minutes of lofi sketches. Maybe if get a 4 disc box set each year it wouldn't be so bad.

Content is yet something else. I don't mind P&AM1983 as a release, I welcome it. Many wished for something else, I understand, but whatever is released will see some people disappointed.

.

However, it is certain that one release a year will put more pressure on each release, as whomever is disappointed by it will be mad to have to wait for another year for the next release.

I completely agree with everything you said. I'm 55, I haven't collected unlreased music at the level others have. I have some, but don't track down every leak. I wait for the official releases and buy everything. What is the point in the estate trying to have a new release every year for 100 or a thousand years vs getting it out now so the fans who supported his whole career can enjoy it?

The bootleggers don't have that much material left beyond live shows and rehearsals, and even those are all pre-1996 (if not pre-1987), so no.

Not only is this screwing over long-time fans who deserve to hear this before they pass on, I feel like the estate is screwing up their own chances at cashing in on Prince's legacy while the siblings are still alive to reap the benefits confused

We are the only ones willing to pay a lot for Prince's unreleased music, why not release it on a site similar to Npgmusicclub and let us purchase unreleased albums, rehearsals etc? One release a year is a joke considering how much music there is in the vaults.

I'm only 28 but even I'm too old for this bollocks, so fans who are in their 40s, 50s, 60s etc are not being well served with just one release per year. Especially when this year's release is as disappointing as the piano rehearsal.

And Prince doesn't exactly have a rapidly increasing young fanbase so when the older fans are gone, who is going to be left to buy the "new" albums?

Two releases per year makes more sense to me. One around his birthday and another around Christmas. The birthday release could be aimed more at his existing fans and the Christmas releases could be more commercial, like deluxe editions of his big albums with bonus tracks, to make the most of the season.

However, if I were in charge I'd just set up a Prince vault website and upload everything on it. Charge a euro/dollar/80p per song and a tenner per album/live show. They'd be raking in the money if they did something like that.

I am Prince''s age, so I am super disappointed! (But proud of that age too) They are obviously not thinking this through. Can we do a petition to the estate? I am not kidding, I think we should. Contact the dang media, they ought to love this dissention among the ranks. Prince would be proud of us, don't U think?

Shit news. Doesn’t make sense. The money is here now, in our pockets. The money won’t be there in ten or twenty years. Half of us will be dead. By all means do one release a year but at the very least we need an online streaming service with the music available to listen to.
RIP sad

This is a lose all around approach. There will hardly be any hardcore Prince fans left after a couple of decades, so what is the point. New fans certainly aren't clamouring for the unreleased. They still have the whole immense catalogue to aborb if they desire to do so. I think 20 CDs released over 20 years would not sell any better than if released over a 5 year span, probably worse. It will be mostly for the fans who have all the relased stuff any way, and there are only so many of us around. And, they will be a lot fewer in 20 years. Plus, they probably won't allow We Can Fuck to be played loudly in the Assisted Living Home!!!

Let's hope Sony doesn't pull the same crap they did with MJ by putting out songs done by someone who impersonates him and label it as 'Prince'. Why the hell did they choose shady Sony for Prince's music???

Call me pessimistic, but I think that "non-album tracks" means b-sides, extended- and single-edit-versions plus remixes (that most of us already have).

You are surely right.

But better than nothing...

And: Some of the live shows, rehearsals and soundchecks that leaked in the past years are just great.

The Miami soundcheck '85,

the Sign O' The Times Tour rehearsals,

the Munich aftershow '87...

...just to name a few that impressed me deeply.

I hope some more stuff like that comes into circulation in the next years.

I've been saying that for twenty years. Prince failing to open his archives and curate his back catalog was always a massive error, especially when the music industry was collapsing. It's not like his fans were saving their money for the "inevitable" release of those vault contents.

.

Quite frankly most of the contents of those vaults should have been released over the years, and his estate should simply be maintaining that catalog and perhaps configure new box sets with material that would be of interets mostly to hardcore fans.
