So it's basically a huge promo for his movie. Okay then.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Too bad he's no longer here to protect himself from other people's agendas. I can't imagine he'd be happy with the wedge Lee and his partners are trying to shove into the already fractured country. Especially for personal $$$ gain.

I think you'll find that Prince was very much about the empowerment of black people

Also, if you find the topic of 'the KKK is bad' to be a controversial wedge into the American people then there's something very wrong with you.

Also see Prince making very special exceptions to Spike Lee for Girl 6 and Bamboozled during his life.

how do the rules work for oscar and grammy for songs for movies? this was obvioulsy previously recorded, but not previously released. Does it qualify for either?

It's best "original" song. So despite when it was recorded, it's a new release of an old song that dates to Civil War days. There may be another song category that it could qualify for.

So are corporate zombies. I'm sure the guy who said we need to get beyond partisan politics to help the people would proudly be behind Spike and his guys trying to get a giant paycheck from the woke crowd (not too mention the NYPD!) by calling the president a motherfucker and saying all sorts of nutty things.

You know Prince. As a Jehovah's Witness, he believed that we just needed to rock the vote and all the world's problems would be solved when [GENERIC DEMOCRAT] get elected.

Spike Lee always comes across as being rather desparate !!!

At any opportunity he will try to trdae off Prince to promote himself.

He should not be allowed to use this song.

This film is only getting publicity because he has used this Prince track.

This man is dispicable!!!!! No one is interesteed in his films other than himself!!!

If you are such a fan Spike. Why did you dedicate a whole documentary about BAD instead of Sign ☮ The Times???!!! Still blows my mind that he didn't focus on Prince's most important album of all time, when it comes to craftsmanship and influence.

Spike Lee's film received a standing ovation at Cannes months before the film's international release. The early screenings did not have Prince's song in it. The film is legitimately liked by folks.

It's not like Spike was just choosing his favourite album of 1987 to do a documentary on. smile

It's from 2012 after Michael had passed, and everyone was reeling and wanted to reflect with respect. Don't be daft razz

I'm sure Spike would have sold his soul to do a Prince documentary, but Prince wasn't going to allow that shit. Maybe now, somewhere down the line, we'll see such a thing.

That too. And since Bad 25 came out 3 years after Michael's passing, we shouldn't expect to hear about Spike Lee working on anything until a year from now.

So I'm guessing you never saw Do The Right Thing.

I always thought, after Sign 'O' The times and with the jehova-thing,

Prince wasn't political enough (beside some racial issues dealt with

on 'The Rainbow Children' and elsewhere).

-

I remember really well when SOTT came out,

and how much all the themes in that song (and album)

were dealt with in newspapers, album reviews, on TV,

even on MTV, and the many times Prince was mentioned for that.

That is somehow an impact.

After that period, it was much much less (again imho of course).

From Spike Lee in June 2016 re: possible prince movie:

Oh, people ask me that left and right. You know, but here’s the thing. I’m going to I’m not gonna reach out to the family right now. It’s way too soon. Everybody and their mother is calling the estate to talk to Prince’s sister and siblings about stuff. You know, trying to make deals and whatnot. I can wait, but I would love to do it. And I think that with him, it would have to be like a 10-part series. You just can’t do that…legacy in two hours. You can’t do it. It would be injustice. It would have to be like a 10-part series.

He also said that the series would have to be as a documentary and not a biopic movie. “I think a studio would make a film a narrative of Prince, which is not what I would like to do. To me, if I was going to try to justice to his life…for me it has to be a documentary, not as a narrative. You couldn’t make Prince’s life into a movie.”

I think Spike doing a multi-part docu-series on Prince would be awesome. I certainly hope that comes to pass in the next few years. If the Prince song somehow garners award attention, it might just help the idea gain some steam to happen sooner rather than later.

Glad he utilized the song for his excellent film. However, the film is doing great on it's own, not because he is trying to exploit Prince. Great reviews and great word of mouth. Other than orgers, who would go to the film just to hear an unreleased Prince song, especially given you can just watch the video. He has been one of the most steadfast Prince fans among celebrities, so I don't get the Spike hate (or perhaps I do).

I totally agree. If anything what he is doing is helpful to Prince's legacy. I read the reviews for the film and Prince's song was not mentioned once. But twitter is filled with people gushing over the song. Some people had to figure out who was even singing during the credits and were surpised that Prince's song was there. . So, Spike decides to make a video (when he didn't need to due to the acclaim already being there for the movie) to draw attention to the song. It was a nice thing to do. Bravo Spike. Spike has got a hard personality to read sometimes, but he respects the hell out of prince.
