Prince jammed with Smashing Pumpkins? Forgive me if this is old news or has already been posted... https://blog.thecurrent.o...o-st-paul/ While there were no Prince covers, Corgan did take a minute to tell a quick story about meeting the late Minnesota icon, who shared with Corgan that he “really liked ‘1979.’” He also joked that Prince used to sit in on Pumpkins shows at the 7th St Entry, but “no one was there to see it.” So... wow. Of course Jonathan Melvoin would be the common link, but it never occurred to me that Prince would have traded licks with Billy Corgan. I’m not soliciting for a boot, but I will say that if any tapes exist I’d love to hear them.  | |

Imagine a duet in the time of Mellon Collie, written by Corgan and sung by both (with Corgan the first part), that would have been tremendous.

well i'm all for people defending Corgan
The problem i have with his/their covers, is his signing. We all know that Corgan is more to Dylan then he is to Mercury, but for his/their own work it fits just perfect. For covers though, there's no-one original version he can beat (and most of them sound quickly boring. Like his covers of Bowie or The Doors, amongst others) | |

I think the word "joked" is a clue here - by the time "1979" was released the Pumpkins were playing arenas. If that's when they met, then Prince couldn't have "sat in" at First Avenue. | |

I guess it makes sense when you parse the statement like that. And I was so hopeful. The Pumpkins did play 7th St Entry in 1990, but as you said “1979” was from 1995 and they were in arenas then. I guess I had invisioned something like a secret aftershow where they played incognito and Prince sat in with them dressed as Tora Tora or the old man from the “Come On” video... but now when I say that in my own head it sounds utterly implausible.Billy Corgan Punk’d me. I was at the show. Billy’s story about meeting Prince (inside a tent in a club) seemed genuine, but the 7th Street Entry story was definitely a joke. TwiliteKid said:
