More licensing? DwD on NPR I turned on the radio the other day, and the tuner was on NPR. During a cutaway from a news segment (probably "All Things Considered"), the beginning of "Dinner with Delores" started playing.
Just instrumental bumper music, no lyrics, lasted about 5-10 seconds.

They do have to pay to use bumper music on tv, but I don't think so on radio. There it should be part of their ascap/bmi licensing. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors. |

I think the part that has everyone amazed is that it's on NPR, not radio in general. Actually, I think NPR makes more sense than a commercial radio station for some reason. | |

I think it's neat and a clever way to reach a new and in this case thoughtful audience versus trying to impact teenagers like most commercial radio. As an amateur DJ, I find it challenging/frustrating that some of his tunes are so intricate that a respectable loop can be tough. They say most modern pop music is build upon 5 seconds of impact because that is how long it takes the listener to decide to change the station. Prince is all over almost every second of each tune so much that a little clip to a trained/xperienced ear could be very distracting and unexpected, kinda like when you hear a post-WB single at the drug store for instance. A riff like DwD is very inviting, I imagine someone was Shazamming to find out what it is. Teach the children ya know?   if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2 | |

So is the surprise more that NPR isn't local? The local news people here in NY pick some super random stuff, there is this older fella Ernie here in NYC that does local news and has his tune for the day, it's entertaining because one day it's Sinatra, the next it's Common 'The Light', then it's like a 10,000 Maniacs 80s album cut, not even a single. Just a few seconds I think is not breaking any laws, I always wondered why it seems the rules are meant to basically obstruct music from being heard. Often due to money it won't make, from not being heard. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2 | |

It left me wondering whether, perhaps, there is an entire suite of music that can be used for similar purposes available in some sort of a block license. I also found it interesting it was a WBR release. |
